I've had the first few lines if this sitting in a word document, and had to get something done with it.
Between Remus & Sirius; could be either POV, or both, I suppose.
Shortest one yet, I think.

Didn't we know that love destroys us? Didn't we know that under the hugs, the kisses, the promises, we were falling apart? How did we not notice the cracks and chips, the mistrust and the guilt ebbing in, sneaking unseen through the door?

"I love you" your smile said, but your eyes couldn't quite agree. You thought me the traitor, and I couldn't bring myself blame you. We'd both seen our fair share of death and despair, we'd both taken knocks and had our hopes dashed, our hearts broken – was there much of us left to trust?

"I love you too", sealed with a kiss and crossed fingers.

Months slipped past unmarked, unmourned. We never said it anymore, those three worlds. After all, it's not the sort of thing you say to a stranger.

We kissed and we hugged, more out of habit – clinging to what we knew in a backwards world. But we couldn't say it. "I Love you". It stung our mouths to say, and broke our hearts to hear.

We fell apart at the seams, silently scrabbling about in the ruins for what we had.

I wish we'd said it just one more time.

I love you.
