Grief

Buffy gasped as she fell. Then came the deafening silence that only happens in the movies. Here's where the close-up of the person falling in slow-motion happens with the operatic music playing in the background.

Then the sobs and the screams. Then the part where Buffy gets up and runs, again in slow-motion, to the person who's dying, to cradle her in her arms as she draws her last breath.

Buffy looked into her eyes. They still shone with life, but the light was fading quickly. She looked up at the demon whose spear had just pierced her heart.

Red skin, huge ram's horns, bat wings, pointed tail, three-pronged spear. This demon fit the ultimate stereotype, the most common depiction of demons for the mortals. This never happened. Slayers were killed during major battles, when the odds are overwhelmingly against them, and they always take out at least five demons with them. Slayers never die during a regular patrol.

The small group of slayers hadn't made any mistakes, not one. They had just been unlucky. It was five slayers against one demon, the odds were very favorable. But of course, the one time that Faith decided not to fight, but to let the newer girls do it themselves, it cost her her life. The demon had lashed out, plain and simple. It knew it was going to die, so it was determined to take at least one slayer out with it. It had thrown its spear just when Faith dropped her guard to check her nails, and three prongs went all the way through her.

The two outside prongs had pierced her shoulders, but the middle one had gone clean through her heart.

Buffy watched as Kennedy beheaded the demon, and it burst into flames as it died. The other three slayers stood around them, watching in disbelief as Faith lay there, dying in Buffy's arms.

"Faith, it's okay, we'll get you some help." Buffy started sobbing at the loss of her friend. "Someone call an ambulance!" No one moved, they were all too stunned. "Come on! You're teenagers! You have cell phones, use them!" Buffy looked back down at Faith in despair.

"Hey, B. You did kill that son of a bitch, right? He's dead?"

"Yeah, he's dead."

"Good. I'd hate to die knowin' they guy that did me in got away."

"Shut up, Faith, you're not going to die."

"Oh, come on, B. Don't try and prolong it. Just let me go already."

"No! You're not going to die!"

Faith reached up and touched Buffy's cheek, and said something she never thought she'd hear from her, "Love ya, B." Faith smiled as the light left her eyes, and her hand slumped to the ground.

Buffy lay her head down on Faith's chest, and the sobs grew heavier, her entire body shaking.

Finally, after what seemed like hours, Buffy sat up and lay Faith's body on the ground, eyes closed, arms crossed over her chest. Buffy's eyes had been dry for a while, having all the tears she possibly could. The ex-potentials had already left, the scene being too much for them. Buffy turned to walk away, then, as an afterthought, she bent down and kissed Faith on the lips, caressing her cold, pale face.

"Love you too, Faith." Buffy whispered as the tears came again. Buffy walked away, not being able to bring herself to look back.
