Sam stood by the window of their bedroom, looking out at the street. Janet, by the doorway, could tell she was in a morose mood, from the tension in her back and the sadness on her face.
Janet's own poor mood had driven her to focus on the project at hand, but now they were both home, and it was time to cast off this burden. She was ready, but she could tell from Sam's sigh that her friend would need help.
"Hey," she said softly, walking over to Sam and wrapping her arms around her from behind. Her head didn't quite reach Sam's shoulder, so she had to content herself with pressing her cheek against Sam's back, inhaling the cotton scent of her undershirt.
"Hey," Sam managed, hoarsely.
Under Janet's hands, Sam's abdomen muscles relaxed somewhat, but Sam still remained perfectly poised at the window, intent on whatever was in the darkness.
After a moment, Janet opened her mouth to prompt Sam to talk, but Sam preempted her. "Do you ever get the idea that what we're doing is wrong? Like, it's a sin? This playing God all the time?"
Janet was momentarily flabbergasted. "I... think we're bettering mankind."
"Are we?" Sam responded quickly, as if she had anticipated those words all evening and had been working on her response. "Maybe we're wrong. Maybe preserving our way of life would be better served by living it. Family, the white picket fence, the--" Her voice caught. "Peace. And calm."
"What about Cassandra? We wouldn't have her if--"
"What about Martouf? Or Sarah?" Sam countered, harshly. "We're dealing with things that affect millions of lives...dealing with forces that have evolved over millinea..."
"Sam..." Janet tried again. She slipped her hands under Sam's loose shirt, rubbing the smooth skin of her belly. The natural nurturer in her unleashed itself. She knew, dimly, her partner didn't stand a chance. "Sometimes a fish is just a fish."
Sam actually laughed. "What?" She struggled to turn around, but Janet held her in place, her grip around Sam's waist strong and sure. "Sometimes a fish is just a fish?"
"Just a fish."
Sam relaxed into Janet's arms, thinking it over. "And sometimes a moment is just a moment."
"Yes."
Janet tasted the victory. She realized that in cheering up Sam, her own mood had improved. She decided to think of that as a soulmate link, rather than co-dependency.
This time Janet let Sam turn around in her arms. Janet's warm hands slid up Sam's bare back, drawing her closer, letting the cotton shirt ride up between them. She met Sam's uncertain gaze with an impish smile.
"Then I want this moment," Sam said. "No one else can have it." She bent her head to kiss Janet, and then the universe was left on its own for a while.
