"Oh shit..." I murmured through my lips as I closed my eyes and rested my head against the cold kitchen wall. I could hear them from here, the top flat in a ten story block. I peered through the tiny gap in the curtains and saw them. A huge mob of the undead surrounding the base of the building. It only takes one to know where you are and then it's all over, the horde will come. Katey came up behind me and placed her hand in mine.
"There's more now, isn't there." It was more of a statement than a question. She knew as well as I did. I turned to face her and ducked to my knees.
"It's gonna be okay, Honey. We're safe up here." I spoke calmly, surprising myself, because inside I was trembling from the lie. It was never going to be safe again. She put her arms around my neck and nuzzled into me.
"I'm scared." She whispered in my ear. I held on to her tight.
"Shh.. Don't be scared." I picked her up of the ground. "Come on, you need some sleep."
"I can't sleep. They get me when I sleep." I held her even closer and harder still.
"They're never gonna get you, Honey. I won't let them. Ever." Katey sniffed and snuggled into me more.
"I love you, Harlow."
"I love you too, Katey. Always. Come on, bedtime." I carried Katey through to my bedroom and placed her down in the middle of the bed and pulled the covers up, tucking them around her.
"I'll be back in a minute, okay?" Katey gave a small smile and nodded at me as I turned around and made my way into the bathroom. I closed the door behind me. gripped the sink and cried.
