"Recognized, Kid Flash, B03", announced the computerized voice. Wally proceeded to storm into the Cave and plop down onto one of the Cave's sofas, causing an annoyed Artemis to glare up at him from the book she was reading. She opened her mouth to say something scathing before seeing the all-too-evident disappointment and hurt in Wally's eyes.
"What's wrong?" she gently asked.
Wally hesitated, before replying, "I asked a girl to my school's Valentine Dance. I got rejected. Please don't make fun of me. I'm not in the mood."
Artemis frowned at the mention of the girl. She had to remind herself that she doesn't care about who Wally likes.
"What about you? Got a lover?" it was Wally's turn to ask.
"No," came the brief, unemotional reply. It had come out quicker than she had intended.
"Really?"
"Huh?"
"Nothing," Wally replied, refused to look at her.
After a brief moment of hesitation, he shot Robin a quick text message.
Wally: Hey, can you play something romantic over the Cave's speakers?
Robin: Yeah. What are you doing?
Wally: Dancing.
The opening chords of a piano began to stream into the room. Artemis looked up questioningly, then at Wally. He looked like he was gathering his resolve. Then he got up and stood in front her, took her left hand in his right, and brought it to his lips.
"May I have this dance?"
"Yes," she said, punching him lightly in the chest before allowing him to lead her into a clear spot in the room.
From their start position with both their arms outstretched, he spun her into his embrace. Her left hand clasped his right. His left was on her hip and her right was on his shoulder. They stepped in time with the gentle melody.
"I didn't know that you even knew how to dance, considering you trip over yourself left and right," she teased.
"I have hidden depths," he replied, earning himself another light punch.
Artemis let herself be spun. Wally then put her in a dip. He leaned over in the middle of the move to whisper in her ear, "You're better than any girl at my school. Or anywhere, for that matter."
Artemis felt her heart flutter. They both straightened, and off of impulse, both leaned forward for a passionate kiss.
Robin watched the two on the Cave's security cameras and smirked to himself. Pulling up the footage on a holo screen, he edited and captured the moment. Suddenly, he let out a startled yelp as Zatanna, who was watching the procedure behind him, seized his wrist and dragged him out of the room and onto the dance floor.
Robin had sent the image to Wally afterwards. Wally, initially embarrassed, had framed the photograph. The picture watched him and Artemis grow old together. Copies of it ended up in the wallets of his parents. Artemis's mother had placed her copy next to her photograph of her daughters when their innocence had not yet been lost.
Now, seventy years later, Artemis and Wally stand underneath the same picture. Today was their 70th Valentine's Day together. Using a cane, Wally slowly made his way to the stereo and pressed the play button with a shaky hand. He walked back slowly to a smiling Artemis. The same piano chords from seventy years ago began to play. Their legs, long having lost the energy to dance, found energy today as the two lovers, hand in hand, mutually supported each other as they swayed to the music.
