Kate still can't fathom how much indifference there is amongst criminals who commit crimes especially those that are homicidal. When she lost her mother, she had vowed to fight the indifference and put them where they belong, behind bars.
From the time she graduated from the Academy up until the present she had been successful in achieving that goal.
What she didn't see coming was to have Rick Castle shadow her to do research for a book series based on her. At first she couldn't stand him but realized before long how often his theories were helpful even if some were not plausible. After a period of time, she considered him her partner and a close friend. During one of their toughest cases, she feared that she had lost him for good when Jerry Tyson, the real Triple Killer had held Rick and Ryan hostage and then escaped after knocking out Ryan but sparing Rick.
From that moment on she knew that she would always value his input no matter how strange in helping her continue to put criminals away.
