A small drabble based on something Marshall's dad said in Son Of Mann. Enjoy.

Once upon a time, in a dark and dusty abandoned warehouse, he had told her that he felt like a keeper of an exotic animal. He'd said that, and she had told him it was his job, one that he couldn't quit.
What she didn't realize was how wrong he was. It wasn't him protecting the world from her, or even her from the world. She was the one protecting him. He was such a soft heart, a gentle man not suited for such a harsh world. She had grown up learning how to be rough and hard, to fight against the real world. She knew how to fight, and she fought for him, to protect him and shield him from a world that would shatter his heart in a split-second.
She was like a mother bear, and Marshall was her cub. God help anything or anyone that came between her partner and that raging bear, unrestrained.
Marshall stirred in her arms, sighing quietly as he nestled closer to her.
Drawing him closer, Mary kissed Marshall's head and held him tight. He had once said that it was his job to protect her. He did, but the reality was that she protected him much more, and she liked it that way. She liked being needed and knowing that every once in a while, she could completely fall apart knowing that he would be there to put her back together.
It was a rough world, and he was not a rough guy. That was why Mary was there to protect him.
The End.
A/N: Hehehe, protective Mary. Gotta love her. Thanks for reading, and please review!
