Hermione sighed and began picking the large chunks of Harry's potion from her hair, the boy was frantically helping, apologizing as he did so. She waved him away, dumping her mass of hair upside down and giving it a firm shake. Harry laughed and walked away, returning with a small hand towel.
She looked up at him as he gently brought it against her cheek, rubbing at the horrid smelling green lumps. "I'm sorry, Hermione, I hadn't read that part about slicing the lizard's tongue."
"For the last time, Harry," she sighed, glaring up at him. "It's alright."
"But..." Harry went about cleaning the smudges from her face, his beautiful eyes fixed upon them. Hermione watched him, her heart thudding dully against her ribs. If he knew...Would it change this? Would he still be so easy going, so friendly.
"Harry, if I told you I loved you, would it change this?" She hadn't meant to say it, her eyes widened as his did, her brain working over time, hurriedly thinking of a way to make right what she had said.
"H-Hermione?" He tried to laugh; it came out forced and tense. "You're kidding, right? You know I like Ginny."
I like Ginny.
Like a knife ripping through her chest. Hermione smiled and rolled her eyes. "Really Harry, I honestly don't know about you anymore! It was just a joke!"
"Oh. Right." He seemed relieved, he began wiping the towel against her face again, too harshly though, and his face was strained.
Just friends.
Because she wasn't anything more.
