Chapter 1: What They Saw
Lissa sighed as she walked behind Chrom. She was bored. Very bored. Not to mention her feet hurt and her legs were itching with the tall grass tickling them. She sighed as she walked, and looked down. The first thing she noticed were some pretty flowers growing amongst the grass. She immediately forgot about what they were supposed to be doing and picked a few, holding them up to her nose and inhaling deeply. The scent was amazing, and she continued picking flowers, slowly straying farther and farther from Chrom and Frederick.
She continued picking flowers until she had a good sized bunch in her hand. She smiled to herself. I'll give these to Emm as a present when we get home, she thought to herself. Suddenly she froze. Oh no! Chrom and Frederick! she thought. She frantically looked around for them and in her search, tripped and fell.
She blinked as she looked at what she had tripped over. Her resounding scream sent birds eight feet away squawking and flapping away.
Chrom's head shot up. He knew that scream…"Lissa!" he yelled, hoping for an answer. When he didn't get one, he quickly glanced at Frederick, and the two of them ran in the direction of the scream. It didn't take them too long to find her, and when they did, Chrom scowled.
"Lissa!" Chrom exclaimed. "You had us worried; we thought some bandits had got you!" He continued on his rant, giving her a piece of his mind when finally Frederick stepped it. He cleared his throat and Chrom looked up. "What Frederick?" he asked, still clearly displeased with Lissa.
Frederick simply pointed to the person Lissa was still sitting on, and Chrom's mouth dropped open.
"Oh," he simply said. Lissa glared at him. "See, this is what I was trying to tell you all along! Gods, you're so dense sometimes Chrom!"
Chrom paused to look at the girl. She had to be around his age, maybe a year or two younger. She was certainly older than 17-year-old Lissa, probably around nineteen or twenty. Her long silvery hair streamed down her back. It seemed to be naturally messy, sticking out at odd angles and curling inwards at odd places.
It seemed to go to around her knees, which were clad in tall brown boots. Her face was pale, despite the summer heat, and her clothes, which consisted of an overlarge coat that fell to around the same point as her hair. Her plain white shirt showed through and underneath she wore tight dark pants that tucked into her boots.
He blinked as he realized he was staring, then glanced at Lissa. "Have you tried to revive her? Or is she…" he swallowed. "No, she's breathing and her heart rate seems fine. I just can't wake her up…" she trailed off.
"Which is surprising with how much you weigh," a new voice, hoarse from disuse, joked. Lissa yelped and fell off the woman, who had opened her eyes to reveal a deep purple color. Lissa flushed and glanced at her. "H-how long have you been awake?" she asked, getting up slowly and dusting herself off. "I don't know…was it since the scream, or since the time you fell on me?" she pondered. Lissa flushed even brighter and frowned slightly.
"Hey! If you saw what looked like a dead body lying in a field, you would scream too," she said defensively. The woman sighed. "Yeah, I guess so…" she smiled at Lissa, the looked up to Chrom. He blinked, before quickly holding his hand out to her. She smiled and took it, standing up. She yelped however, as her legs, muscles slightly atrophied from little use, couldn't support the weight of her body and she stumbled.
Chrom quickly caught her and she flushed slightly. "Thank you…Chrom," she murmured, before blinking in surprise. Chrom froze for a millisecond before nodding at her. "So you've heard of me, huh?" he asked her. "N-no…it's strange…" the woman continued muttering to herself before snapping her head up. Chrom looked at her strangely before asking, "What's your name?"
"Miki," the girl said without thinking, before freezing and placing a hand over her mouth. "What, what's wrong?" Chrom asked.
"It's nothing," the girl said before sighing and looking up. Frederick frowned at this.
"Milord, if I may…"
"Go ahead Frederick," Chrom stated.
"Milord…this woman. We don't know who she is. She could be a Plegian spy for all we know!" Then, to Miki he said, "Woman. State your purpose." Miki blinked. "I-I don't know…" she murmured. Frederick scowled, his frown line deepening. "Milord, I strongly suggest against…"
"But what if it is true Frederick?" Chrom argued. "We can't just leave her here, alone with no place to go!" "Yeah, that's right!" Lissa nodded, her pigtails bouncing. "We can't just leave her by herself!"
Frederick sighed. "Very well Milord; you know best…but I still don't like it," he muttered under his breath.
Chrom chose to ignore this and smiled and clapped his hands together. "Alright, now that's settled, Let's be off! We should return to the capital by afternoon tomorrow!"
Miki yelped. "Wait, don't I get a say in this?" she asked. Chrom chuckled. "Peace, friend," he said with a warm smile. "I promise, we'll hear everything in the town. It's our last stop anyway."
Miki frowned but said nothing as she followed Chrom and Lissa out of the field, with Frederick behind her keeping watch like the stoic guardian he was.
