A Rainy Day
'Oh, curse it all!' Rei thought as she trudged through another puddle. Rain pelted down from the heavens, soaking through her clothes to chill her skin. Even though she had her arms wrapped around her slim body, no warmth returned to her.
'Curse the rain! And curse this ridiculous uniform!' Her school uniform offered absolutely no protection. The mini-skirt kept riding up her thighs with every step she took and the jacket clung to her curves. As a result, every guy that she passed would whistle at her.
"And above all, curse the weatherman!" She screamed at the top of her lungs, scaring some birds out of a nearby tree. This morning, he claimed that today would be a beautiful, sunny day without a single cloud in the sky. He couldn't have been more wrong.
Tears began to run down her face, although it wasn't noticeable with all the rain. Today of all days had to be the worst. Today! On her birthday! First the water heater broke, so she had to take a freezing cold shower. Then her hair dryer burned out. Then her locker was jammed, which led to her being late to class. On top of that, no one had wished her a happy birthday! Not one single person.
Suddenly, a car sped past, causing a huge wave the wash over Rei. It was like an unending chain of misfortune.
She collapsed on the sidewalk, sobbing uncontrollably. Everything seemed to be going wrong today, but yesterday was perfect! Why couldn't it be perfect again today? Why? Why? Why?
Then she noticed a pair of shoes. Teary-eyed, she slowly looked up at the person looming over her.
Yaten stood in front of her, holding his umbrella courteously over her, shielding her from the rain. He extended his hand out to her. She stared at it for a while, then stood up without his help. She wiped the tears from her eyes, then glared at him scornfully.
"I don't need your pity," Rei said.
"Well good, because I'm not giving it to you," he replied. Rei stared at him disbelief, trying to figure out where he was going with this.
"Then why are you here?" She asked.
"Well, you look like you've had a pretty bad day."
"You look like you've had a pretty bad day," Raye repeated in a mocking tone. "Yeah, I've had a pretty bad day. Don't even get me started! I-"
"Then I won't," Yaten interrupted before she could start talking again.
"Fine," she stated, turning to walk away.
"Wait!" He said, grabbing her wrist.
Rei turned around, and what she saw surprised her. In his hand was a small box, decorated with swirly red and purple designs, her two favorite colors.
"Happy Birthday."
