So... don't really know where this came from. I was listening to a song at home when the lyrics jumped at me and I sat down and wrote... this. The lyrics immediately made me think of Matt and Scarlett (Since reading the fanfiction on here, I've started to low-key ship them) - it just seemed to suit their arc so well. It's a great song too - State of the heart by Mondo Rock. Highly recommend it if you like 80s rock ballads.
Anyway, enough of me talking (or rather, writing). Hope you enjoy! :)
If I seem confused
It's just the state of the heart
I wait in the dark

They had met several times before, in the Dreamworld. But this time, it was real.
A bare cell, deeply buried under Hong Kong (and with a raging typhoon on the way) was hardly the ideal place for their first encounter - but when had anything that happened to the Gatekeepers been so? They were all in over their heads, anyway.
Maybe that was why it was so easy talking to him. They both had been through so much, and in a way, their journeys had been uncannily similar. Heck, they had lived not even a few blocks from each other in Dulwich, before all this had begun.
And most of all, he understood. Something that made this confusing, utterly insane chain of events just a little more fathomable. Just a little more bearable.
Because now she deeply, truly knew she wasn't in this alone anymore.

Who would have thought - after everything they had been through - that they would see each other again?
Certainly not Scarlett.
She wasn't even sure she would make it out of Cairo - and there'd definitely been more than a few close calls. But now they were here, in Antarctica.
Her.
Richard.
Lohan.
And Matt.
Despite everything, they had been united again. Two of the five.
If not for the letter. The letter that obviously leads to a trap, but that he insists on believing in anyway with ice-cold determination. She argues. Richard argues. But his mind is set. There's nothing they can say. Nothing they can do. In Matt's own words: right now, this is the only hope they have left. She knows that and she knows she can't stop him, but that doesn't mean she's willing to accept it. Not completely.
As she sees Matt and Richard off, watches the Zodiac pull away, she realizes how much that remains unsaid between them. So much unfinished, unexplored. And now, that the end is near, she might never get a chance. It could be too late now. Matt might never return.
But until the ship comes back, until she can see it - and hopefully him again - with her own eyes, she will remain in the dark.
And so she does the only thing she can do.
She waits.
