John had never lied to Dean about what was out there or not since Mom had died anyway. Dean knew that as he sat in another dingy motel watching his brother sleep. Dad had never lied about what was out there or just how much damage it could do.

He'd taught Dean some of what to do to keep himself safe, salt lines and iron and how to shoot a gun but Dean knew that didn't cover enough of what could go wrong. Dad didn't hide from him how dangerous life was or how much of a struggle it was to stay on top when fighting monsters.

Dad didn't hide from him the need to keep secrets from other people or how they got their money because Dad needed him to know, needed him to help protect Sammy and Dad needed someone to talk to when things were too much. Dad told him how precious Sammy was and how it was his job to keep Sammy safe, like he'd been doing his whole life since his brother was born but even more so since that night.

Dad might try but he couldn't hide when he came home drunk either. Dean knew he missed Mom, missed their old life, missed his friends. Dean knew all John had got left was Sammy and him and that sometimes they weren't enough.

Dean knew that Dad didn't lie to him, but still he made him lie to Sammy. He let Sammy believe that monsters weren't real, that there was nothing frightening outside their doors.

Sometimes Dean wished that his Dad lied to him as well.
