"Guess what, Rory!" Lorelai exclaimed.

Rory was six years old at the time and a wide-eyed, curious little girl.

"What is it, mommy?" Rory asked sensing her mother's excitement and getting more anxious by the minute.

"We, my dear, are going to the circus!" Lorelai awaited the squeals of excitement that generally followed such a statement, but none came.

Rory wrinkled her nose and her head fell to the side in a confused expression, "What's that?"

Lorelai slumped a bit and then got down on her knees so that she was eye level with the small child, "The circus is a wonderful and exciting place! They have clowns and acrobats!"

Rory didn't look impressed, "I don't even know what you're talking about."

Twenty-two-year-old Lorelai rolled her eyes and let out a sigh of exasperation, "You'll get cotton candy."

"Oh! Yay!" A look of comprehension came over Rory's face.

Lorelai nodded and grinned.

Then they both started jumping up and down and chanting 'Circus! Circus!'

They were in the small shed that they had called home for six years now, and as they jumped, another idea came to Lorelai.

"Hey, kid, you wanna go to the diner and get some coffee from the diner guy?"

Rory grinned and nodded her head, "I love the diner guy! Don't you, mommy?"

Lorelai got a slightly goofy expression, "Yes. Yes I do."

At the diner:

Luke looked up from his ordering pad to see Lorelai and her small daughter walking hand in hand into the diner.

He walked around the counter and stooped in front of Rory to give her a hug, "Hey, cupcake."

"Hey, muffin." Lorelai smiled and walked over to the stools at the counter.

Luke picked Rory up and walked back behind the counter, "I wasn't talking to you, fruitcake."

"I thought that I was a cupcake." Lorelai pouted.

"Fine. But you're a fruit cupcake."

Lorelai smiled and Rory tugged on Luke's shirt to get his attention, "Uncle Luke."

Luke looked at Rory expectantly, "What is it, princess?"

"Can I have a piggy back ride?"

"Sure thing. But I'll tell you what. You can come to the kitchen with me too. While I go make your mother a nice cup of coffee. Okay?"

Rory nodded and Lorelai smiled appreciatively, "Thanks."

"No big deal. Hot chocolate for the kid?"

"No. Coffee is fine for her too." Lorelai grinned.

"No! I am not giving a six year old child coffee!" Luke looked astounded.

"She's got to learn sometime, Luke."

"No she does not! I don't drink coffee, I drink tea." Luke said.

"Where are your priorities?"

"In that cup of hot cocoa that she will be drinking instead of that junk that you ingest on a regular basis."

Lorelai shook her head in shame "Go ahead! Ruin her why don't you!"

Luke waved her comment off and headed for the kitchen with Rory on his back.
