I do not own Rise of the Guardians, and probably never will.
That night, after everyone thought she'd gone to bed, Pippa crept down to the pond. She stood at the very edge of it, and looked out over the ice. There was a thin crust of ice over the place where Jack had fallen through.
"Jack," she whispered. Her voice sounded small, and scared. She lifted her chin and tried not to cry. This has to be a trick, it has to. Jack always plays tricks. Any minute now, he's going to walk out of the woods on the other side of the pond, and he'll be perfectly fine. "Jack, it's not funny anymore," she said aloud. "I'm scared."
It's a trick, just a trick. Jack has to be okay. He's always okay. Even when he fell out of that tree, and dad thought he'd broken his neck, he was okay. Jack will be fine. Jack is fine, she told herself. "They think you're dead, Jack. You have to come back. I know you're alive. I believe in you," she whispered.
The ice cracked. Pippa yelped and scampered backward into the woods. When she didn't hear any more of those sickening cracking noises, she slowly crept back toward the pond.
There was a boy skating across the ice. He was pale, deadly pale, and his hair was white. Even his clothes seemed faded. Frost formed wherever his feet touched the ice. But he looked like⦠Jack. And once she heard his laugh, there was no doubt in her mind that this strange, pale boy was her brother.
She stayed at the edge of the pond, watching, long after Jack had flown away above the trees. His laughter rang in her ears. She smiled for what felt like the first time in months.
They would mourn him.
There would be a funeral.
But only Pippa Overland would know the truth.
She would hear his laughter on the wind occasionally, and she would smile.
Whenever she saw frost on the windows in the mornings, or was hit by a snowball no one would admit to throwing, she would know it was a gift from her big brother.
She believed in Jack Frost.
She knew he was real.
Random Note (Which I Thought I Should Add Before I am Violently Flamed): I know 'Pippa' isn't technically Jack's sister's name, but I'm using it because it's the most widely-recognized fan nickname for her.
