"You couldn't make a hyena laugh, Severus," Lily teased as they sat by a large tree near the Black Lake. It was a nice afternoon, not too hot and not too bright. Potions had ended early and the two friends decided to enjoy the fresh air before dinner.

Severus scowled, "I'll have you know I'm very funny. Just because I don't go around being an attention hog like Potter doesn't mean I can't make someone laugh."

Lily grinned back at him, "I'll believe it when I see it, Sev."

Severus then thought a bit. He had to prove to her that he was funny. He had heard that girls like guys who were funny, and obviously Lily was one of those girls. She loved to laugh, sometimes even laughing at nothing. And now she was laughing at him and his inability to make anyone laugh. He had to prove her wrong.

He said suddenly, "Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now." Lily just stared at him but he could see the smile she tried to hold in as the corner of her mouth quivered.

He tried again, "I've always wanted to learn sign language. I've heard it's pretty handy." Lily's cheeks rose, almost causing her eyes to close but she still refused to laugh.

Severus smirked. He'd have to try his best pun: "To write with a broken quill is quite pointless, don't you think?"

That one seemed to have done the trick. Lily was rolling in the grass with laughter, her face red as she clutched her stomach. Severus smiled proudly, having gotten her to laugh. But then she said, "Sev, those were so horrible." His smile fell. They were horrible? So why was she laughing?

She continued, "They were so horrible, they were hilarious." She rose from the grass and then shoved his arm playfully. "Okay then, you are funny, horribly funny." Severus scowled but inside he was beaming. He didn't care that they were horrible. Lily just called him funny.
