Hello. This is my first fanfic. This will be a series of stories focusing on the relationship of Ruby and Fernando, and it will eventually focus on the relationship of Ruby and Donna. It will go in order, starting in 1959 when Ruby and Fernando met, and ending in present day Mamma Mia time. Enjoy.
1959
Ruby's heels glittered in the moonlight as she stepped outside and descended a few steps into an alleyway, her feet aching like never before. She stretched out her muscles and took a deep breath. She was relieved to feel the fresh night air filling her lungs. Backstage it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and booze, and it certainly didn't smell any better in the bar where she was performing with her band. This was their fifth show in Mexico, and although she loved to sing, it had already become a bit lonely.
"Ruby, you're back on in five." The band manager peeked his head out the back door and glanced down over the raining to look at her. "You okay?"
Ruby nodded her head and immediately turned around to climb back up the stairs and reenter the building.
"Oh, and I have a few guys asking to meet you." the manager added nonchalantly, closing the door behind them.
Ruby faked a smile. "Send them back after the show."
The band manager turned to walk in the opposite direction while Ruby returned to her dressing room for a few sips of water before returning to the stage. Men always asked to meet her after the show. Sometimes meeting new guys was actually a lot of fun for her. She would encounter some really exciting people every now and then, but other times, it just felt like too much. Her manager always pushed her to "give the people what they want" because it was good for publicity.
After taking a drink of water, Ruby walked back to the stage alongside the guitar player.
"You sound great tonight, Ruby." he said, hair falling into his face. The entire band was completely wasted, yet they all still managed to put on an amazing show.
"Thanks." Ruby muttered softly. She stepped forward onto the stage and felt the light hit her face, blinding her momentarily. Immediately, she straightened her stance and put a smile on her face.
One Hour Later
Fernando Cienfuegos laughed alongside his friends as they walked down the streets of Cuetzalan, Mexico. All three of them were young, poor soldiers, but they never failed to have a good time on Friday nights. All three of them told jokes and pointed out rich tourists while sipping the three beers that were in their hands. At first they attempted to keep their laughter down, but the more they drank, the harder it became.
"I hear strange music coming from over here." said Juan with a smile. "Let's go check it out."
Fernando shook his head. "The music is coming from the bar over there. That bar charges forty pesos for admission. That's where all the rich bands play."
The third friend, Ricardo, clapped Fernando on the back. "Don't be silly, Fernando. We're not going to go in the front door, we're going in the back way."
Fernando grinned nervously at his friends. He had a bad feeling about this plan, but he followed Juan and Ricardo across the street anyway. His eyes fell upon the poster of the beautiful blonde woman that was hanging on the wall outside the bar. Ruby Sheridan and the Supremos it said.
"Come on, this way." Ricardo said, leading them into an alleyway.
Fernando felt his heart begin to thud against his chest. "Wait, guys!" he whispered anxiously, hurrying to keep up with his buddies. "We aren't suitably dressed to go in this bar. It's for the upper class."
Juan and Ricardo stifled their laughter and ignored Fernando's warning, determined to keep quiet and not get caught. All of them were dressed in torn jeans and old T-shirts. These were the only clothes they wore other than their uniforms.
"I think this is the right staircase." Juan said, coming to a stop in the alleyway. "Let's hope for the best."
Fernando waited at the bottom of the metal stairs as his two friends climbed up towards the door. Ricardo placed his hand on the door knob and turned it.
"Dammit. Locked."
Fernando felt a wave of relief fall over him. "Well, guess we better go."
"Not so fast, Amigo! What's the rush?" Juan asked. "We just have to wait here until someone steps outside for a smoke. Then we can sneak in."
This was not a good idea and Fernando knew it, but once again, he found himself agreeing with his friends' plan.
"You two hide in the shadows." Juan instructed Ricardo and Fernando. "I'll wait here by the door and pretend that I also stepped outside to smoke."
Ricardo descended the stairs to hide and wait with Fernando. The two of them moved underneath the staircase where they could not be seen as easily. They looked up at the landing where Juan's feet could be seen through the little holes in the metal scaffolding.
It was about three or four minutes before the back door swung open.
"Well HELLO there." Juan's voice said smoothly.
Fernando and Ricardo squinted to try and see the person who had come outside through the holes, but they could not make anything out clearly.
"Um...hello." replied a cool female voice. "Can I help you with something?"
"Want a cigar?" Juan offered.
"Do I look like I smoke cigars?"
Fernando couldn't help but chuckle a little. He found it amusing to hear Juan being turned down.
"Well since you don't really seem in the mood to chat, I guess I'll just step back inside." Juan said.
The female voice laughed. "I know you didn't pay admission. You're trying to sneak in. Why don't you get lost and go to some other bar?"
Juan sighed in defeat. "Come on, Sexy, why won't you let me in."
Fernando wished that Juan would just give up.
"This place isn't for people like you."
Juan stammered, taken aback. "People like me? What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means," said the woman, "that you smell like cheap liquor. And I thought it smelled bad inside but clearly I was wrong."
Fernando and Ricardo put their hands over their mouths but it did not stop their laughter from echoing.
"What is that?" the woman asked.
Knowing that their cover was blown, Fernando and Ricardo stepped out from underneath the stairs into the middle of the alleyway. The female looked down at them with disapproval.
Fernando, still laughing, gazed up at the landing to see the defeat and rejection written all over Juan's face. When his eyes landed upon the woman's face, however, his laughter faded. His chest suddenly felt constricted and a tingle was sent down his spine. Never before in his life had he seen such a breathtaking woman. She was wearing a glittery gold dress and had the most beautiful blonde hair with big, evenly spaced waves.
"And what are you looking at?" she asked rudely, her eyes meeting Fernando's.
Fernando knew that it was dark out, but it somehow felt like a spotlight had just hit him. "Nothing..." he stuttered nervously. "You're...you're Ruby Sheridan, right?"
Ricardo looked sideways at Fernando. "You know this woman, Amigo?"
Fernando shook his head. "No, but I know that she's headlining this bar."
Juan's jaw dropped. "Well where are my manners!" he laughed jokingly, playfully nudging Ruby's arm. "I just thought you were some rich girl, I didn't know you were the one and only Ruby-whatever your last name is."
"Juan, come on." Fernando insisted, giving his friend a dirty look.
Ruby shook her head in disgust at all three of the soldiers. "You three better beat it before I tell security." she threatened them. "And now if you'll excuse me, I have some real men to meet." She turned around to go back inside of the bar, leaving the three of them stupidly standing in the alley.
Fernando pretended to jovially laugh along with his friends, but for the first time in his life, he didn't feel the desire to make fun of the rich girl. He couldn't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, she had given him a little smile before going back inside. But it was probably just his imagination.
