~ Nothing ~

Lang came awake as he felt a weight settle next to him on the bed. It was too dark to see anything, but he had no doubt as to who the intruder was. He would know her scent anywhere.

She curled against his side and laid her head on his chest.

"Shih-na? What's wrong?" he asked, his voice thick with sleep.

"… nothing."

Yeah, right. Nothing had sent her crawling into his bed in the middle of the night.

"It's NOT nothing!" he snapped, irritated. If she had come to him seeking comfort, then why didn't she trust him enough to tell him what she was upset about?

She thought about correcting his grammar, telling him that double negatives cancel each other out… But even the thought of how that conversation would go made her want to laugh, so she kept quiet. He wasn't badgering her for an answer, either, so for the next few minutes she just lay there listening to his heartbeat and the steady rhythm of his breathing.

She was just starting to drift off when he called out tentatively, "Shih-na?"

She sighed. If Lang was one thing, he was stubborn.

"Just hold me?" It came out sounding more like a question than a command.

"What's wrong?" he growled, his frustration at her refusal to confide in him getting the better of him.

"Lang…" She sighed heavily. "It's nothing you can fix. Hold me, just for tonight… and in the morning it will be like nothing happened."

He wrapped his arms around her tightly, and held on for all he was worth.

When he woke up in the morning, she was gone. The events of that night did not repeat themselves at any time in the future, and the two of them did not ever speak of it.

She acted as though that night had never happened. And perhaps, in her mind, it simply blinked out of existence as easily as that.

But to him, it could never just become nothing.
