"You're lucky Evans was here, Snivellus." James sneered. Lily looked on with pity at the poor, bloody, embarrassed figure on the ground, her closest friend.
"I don't need help from filthy mudbloods like her!" Severus spat at James. Looking at Lily, and back to James, he covered his mouth, shamed. "I did not just say that..." he muttered.
Mudblood.
"Apologize to Lily!" James yelled, pointing his wand at Snape as if he wanted to hex him again, but wasn't sure, because Lily was there. Truthfully, Lily really wouldn't have minded, she was so angry.
"Don't make him apologize!" Lily yelled. "You're...you're just as bad as him!"
"ME?" James asked. "I'd never call you a...an m-word!"
"All purebloods stink!" Lily insisted. "You walk around with your hair all messed up, hexing anyone you can just for fun, making fun of everyone except for me...You make me SICK, James Potter!
Lily turned on her heel and hurried away, her red ponytail swinging behind her.
"James!" laughed Sirius, pulling him to the tree. "You're looking even more moony than Moony!"
"Stop it!" Potter said, trying to catch up with Lily, but Snape blocked his way."Take one step closer and everyone will know about Remus's 'furry little problem.'" he hissed through his teeth.
Potter looked at Snape, rolling his eyes. "You're in no position to make threats, Half-Blood Prince."
Mary, a girl who had been sitting at the lake, watching the surface to see if the Giant Squid appeared for a project, turned and asked, "Doesn't Remus just have a badly-behaved rabbit or something?"
Potter nodded quickly, and Snape opened his mouth to say something, but Potter held his hand over his mouth.
Lily, looking back, saw her second-best - no, best, now that Snivellus had turned so horrible - friend, staring dreamily at Sirius Black as he ran a hand through his hair.
Sirius saw her looking at him and winked. Mary smiled, a blush creeping into her cheeks.
She stormed over, knocked on a tree, and when Mary saw her, Lily pulled her hand, saying, "Come on, we need to get to lunch."
Mary sighed a sigh of resignation and followed her friend.
