Prologue

Abby is amazing.

Abby is amazing.

Abby is amazing!

I am going to Spain. In Europe. Europe! At first, I thought Derek not going away was a catastrophe, but I was wrong! It is fantastic for me, in many, many ways.

Number one: First of all, Europe. This, of course, should explain it all.

Number two: no Derek. Again, self explanatory.

Number three: It's Spain. Think how educational this experience will be. (without Derek!)

Number four: I'll have my own room.

Number five: It's not by Derek's!

Number six: Spain! Cute, Spanish boys!

Number seven: The aforementioned cute Spanish boys do not know me as Klutzilla. And will not! Or Spacey. Or stinky-feet (which, may I add, my feet are not). Or any other juvenile nickname Derek may come up with.

Number eight: No Derek!

See? All in all this will make for an amazing semester.

Abby is amazing!

My mom rocks.

Okay, so it doesn't exactly rock that Casey is going to Europe, especially since it's something she wants.

It does rock, though, that she's leaving.

Spacey has left the building.

No more Klutzilla terrorizing the halls of my house and my school.

No more questioning my authority.

No family meetings, no nagging Nora into nagging my dad into nagging me.

This is a fantastic thing, my friends.

This term is going to be great.

Thanks, mom.

George huffed as he lugged the last suitcase of Casey's down the stairs, with Edwin following.

"Geez, Casey, did pack all of Canada in there?" he asked, although not attempting to help at all.

"No!" she replied defensively. "I only packed the absolute essentials. Those are my books."

"What? All of this-" George gestured to his labored breathing and red face. "For books?"

"Hey, books are important," she defended, if a bit sheepishly, and changed the subject. "Has anyone seen Derek?"

Nora breezed through the doorway. "Honey, we need to make a move on it if we are going to make it to the airport."

Casey's face fell. "Well, goodbye everyone." She wrapped Edwin in a merciless hug, unfazed by his squirming, followed by Marti, and finally a semi-awkward hug with George. "I'm going to miss you guys…" her voice broke, and her eyes grew glassy.

"George, honey, we'll be back soon," she said, wrapping her arm around Casey's shoulder. Casey grabbed her suitcase, and gave one last glance over her shoulder, as if she was giving Derek a chance to hurry up and show.

"Bye, you guys."

"Where were you?" George demanded as Derek walked through the door.

He threw his bag on the floor, quickly followed by his jacket. "Hockey practice," he replied, as if it should be obvious.

"Well, you should have been here, saying good-bye to your sister."

"Why would I do that? My sisters right here, right Smarti?" he asked, scooping her in his arms and tossing her in the air.

"Smerek, stoppp!" she shrieked, giggling.

"Derek, you know what I'm talking about. That was totally irresponsible of you. I had told you to be here, not to mention rude. Casey felt horrible."

Derek snorted, setting Marti down. "I'm sure she wasn't too upset about my absence. Besides, Casey cries." He shuddered. "That is really not something I wanted to witness."

"She did cry, daddy," Marti acknowledged, "but Smerek, you should have said goodbye. I'm gonna miss Casey." Her face looked decidedly pitiful.

"She's going to come back soon, Marti. In the mean time, maybe we should learn better manners while she's away, so she can be surprised when she gets back." George sent a pointed look in Derek's direction.

Derek laughed. "Right."
