1994
It was storming. Hard. Lightning flashed in the pitch black sky and the booming thunder made windows shake in their frames.
People were taking shelter in their houses, because no one dared to go outside in this weather. It was simply too dangerous.
In the midst of this storm in an open field stood an old barn, making cracking noises as the howling wind blew through the cracks in the wood. The building seemed abandoned and it was a miracle that it was still standing in this thunderstorm.
It was dark inside, but the flashes that lit up the surroundings every few seconds enabled you to make out two shapes, human shapes, standing opposite each other. One of them a young man, the other a young woman.
Both were wearing black clothes that had been soaked by the rain. The storm had seemingly surprised them when they were outside, so they had sought shelter in the first building on their route.
Both figures had blonde hair and golden eyes. They were quietly staring at one another, none of them moving a muscle.
The male was holding another unconscious man by his neck, who looked like he was in his late 40's. He was beaten up badly, blood streaming down his face.
The young woman's facial expression was calm, but her golden eyes held desperation and anger in them.
Deciding she couldn't handle the silence anymore, she spoke up. 'Let him go,' she said, silently cursing her voice for trembling.
The young man shook his head, flicking his wet hair aside as he did so. 'I can't. I have to do this. To be stronger, so I can protect you. I have to be stronger, Sienna. Please understand.'
'No, I don't understand, Nathan. You are strong enough already. You did protect me. There were just so many of them.' The girl, apparently named Sienna, stepped closer, cautiously approaching as the water from her soaked clothing dripped onto the floor.
'Stay back, sister, or he's a dead man!' Nathan yelled frantically. He grabbed the man's neck even tighter, making him groan.
'He's already a dead man, brother, you killed him. I mean, have you seen him? He's barely breathing,' Sienna replied, but she stopped moving anyway.
Her words made Nathan look at the bruised man, and he realized his sister was right. His victim was lost and wouldn't even live to see the next day.
'Even more reason to make him useful,' the older sibling said, returning his attention to the blonde girl.
'By drinking his blood?' Sienna asked as she raised her eyebrows. A humorless laugh escaped her lips. 'You know once you drink his blood, there is no way back and I will have to kill you.' She was now twirling a knife in her hand that reflected the white flashes outside.
Nathan blinked a few times. 'Are you serious?' He asked incredulously. 'We are twins. Would you really kill your own blood?'
His sister nodded slowly. 'If I have to, yes. Brother or not, there are rules. No drinking human blood, remember? Just let him go, so we can go home and pretend this never happened.'
When there came no answer, she became desperate. 'Nathan, please. I don't want to hurt you,' she pleaded.
Sighing and closing his eyes, Nathan seemed to overthink his plan to sink his pointy teeth into the man's neck and drink his blood.
Sienna felt a glimmer of hope, but when her brother once again locked eyes with her, he had made up his mind.
'I'm sorry, sister. I love you.'
Before Sienna could even process what happened, the man was dead on the ground and Nathan was covered in his blood. She screamed her brothers name, but she could see in his golden orbs that she lost him.
Faltering for a moment, she looked at the corpse on the sandy floor. When she tilted her head again her brother, her twin, was gone.
So here it is! The prologue. It's a little short, but I hope you enjoyed it! The following chapters will hopefully be a bit longer.
