Sara wasn't ever really sure how Greg had convinced Grissom to let him into their home, but one afternoon he showed up with two copies of The Road by Cormac McCarthy and proclaimed they were both going to work their way through Oprah's book club list.
She had a feeling she was being babysat by Greg for a now over protective Grissom. It was a little endearing.
And a little frustrating.
But she and Greg worked their way through the post-apocalyptic tale in a matter of days. They poked the plot and discussed the father and son throughout the journey. It had been stimulating and a good way to work off her frustration of being stuck at the house.
When they were done discussing the first book, Sara announced she would pick the next book and chose East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It had been a favorite of hers in her American Lit class back in college. Grissom actually joined in reading and discussing the book. He really was a great teacher, and it showed in how he would challenge Greg's ideas. Of course that meant she had to counter Grissom's arguments and give Greg a little support.
Spending time with Greg every afternoon made her realize that while she was happy in her relationship with Grissom, keeping it a secret had alienated her from her friends. As the fallout from her kidnapping lessened, Grissom didn't have to go into work as early, and he became a more regular member of the little book club, so they let the boss pick their third book.
Bruno always launched a full frontal nasal assault as soon as Greg walked through the door. The smell of Greg's cat and probably the crime scene he'd been at, a veritable treasure trove to the dog's nose. He started bringing dog treats hoping to escape to the couch a little sooner.
The night Sara returned to work, Greg presented her with a Barnes & Noble gift card and told her that he hoped she finished the reading list.
"Why wouldn't we finish the reading list? Have you become illiterate all of the sudden?" Her voice had a trace of sarcasm, and Greg realized their little forays into the different worlds of authors weren't over. She caught Grissom smiling as he headed out the door.
Over the next few months the three of them work their way through most of the book list while sharing breakfasts or dinners, depending on work schedules. It's an odd friendship the three of them share, but it's nice and fun, and even a bit educational.
