He'd surpassed all of her expectations, and not just in this situation. When they'd met the attraction was obvious however she never expected the flowers that he got her. They'd been together for a couple of months now and they were still at the stage where they couldn't get enough of each other. That's why it was hardly surprising when he'd text her and asked her to meet him in the store cupboard. She'd smiled when she'd seen the text, Zoe had of course assumed that like usual that he just wanted to have sex in the cupboard. That's why when she walked in and saw Max sat down with his guitar in his hand, she was shocked.
"What's going on?" She asked quietly, as she locked the door behind her. Max propped the guitar up against the arm of the chair that he was sat on and approached Zoe. He took her hand and led her over to the table that sat in front of the chair that he'd just vacated.
"Trust me Zoe." His words did little to calm the storm of panic inside her, she wasn't sure what she was panicking over but it was likely something to do with the fact that this seemed serious. He noticed this and so lent down and kissed her before returning to the arm of the chair, picking his guitar up as he did.

She watched in awe as Max strummed the strings on the guitar, she was speechless when he began to sing to her too. Her heart melted at how romantic he was being, it just confirmed that she was right to pick him to be with and to hell with the consequences. Normally her brain would have thrown up the issue that when together on hospital premises, they usually whispered, the fact that there was music coming from the room heightened the chance of discovery, but in that moment it was irrelevant.

"I really do like you Zoe." Max said as his song came to a finish and he placed the guitar down. The red flush to his cheeks could have been mistaken as a reaction to the heat, Zoe knew differently though. Max was a ladies man, he did one night stands and cheesy pick up lines, not romance, relationships and grand gestures. He was a fish out of water when it came to this, but then it was further proof how just how much he liked Zoe, that he was willing to change his ways.
"And I really like you too Max, that was lovely by the way." Zoe replied with a small smile on her face, she was trying to act casual but it was clear that she was more than happy.
"How much longer do you have?" Max questioned, Zoe looked at her watch knowing exactly what he meant now.
"That depends, how long do we need?"
"Again that depends. What was your excuse to get away?"
"I was literally just leaving a meeting so unless anyone's checking up on me then no ones going to know that I'm not still in that meeting." Zoe replied as she moved from her position on the table to Max's lap. "Why what did you have planned?"
"Nothing, my breaks over, I was just wondering how much of a break you had!" Max teased.
"Very funny!" Zoe replied with a mock laugh. "Now really how long do you have?" Zoe asked. Max silenced her with a kiss.
"I was serious, but you know keep them keen and all that! So I'll see you later then?" Max asked as he got up.
"Wait and see." Zoe replied as she stood up and joined him by the door. Max placed another kiss to her lips before Zoe checked whether the coast was clear or not and left.

Max looked down at his pager, no one had needed him so he took another moment to sit down and just contemplate life. This was a different him than a little over a year ago, before he'd moved to be nearer his sister, but a good different. His and Zoe's relationship was already the most successful one he'd had by a long way, in a non-soppy, non fairy tale way the relationship had changed him but to a better person, the person who'd he never realised he'd always wanted to be.
