Just a little holiday story I cooked up. It's Satine rambling to herself.
Set before the movie and Christian. Enjoy.
A frost ridden night~
She stood above the elephant. And it, was, FREEZING!! But it was also, Christmas Eve. She thought about her wishes and lists to Santa Clause when she was a child.
As the snow fell softly around her, she pulled her jacket tightly around her shoulders. She had had it forever, that jacket; Marie had given it to her when she was about eleven. It was too big for her then, and it was too big for her now. But she kept it, because it reminded her of a happier time, when Christmas actually meant something, and a gift given was cherished, no matter how small. Every year, at this time, she would fantasize, well not really fantasize, but picture a world in which she were spending Christmas with someone.special. Someone different than the people here, who could care less about these sorts of things. But who could blame them really? Satine thought. What kind of a Santa Clause delivered presents to courtesans and diamond dogs, and selfish greedy people? "Not our Santa clause." she whispered, almost to reassure herself. Slowly, she walked to where she could see the dancers. They, and all of the men, carried on as if today were any other day. No decorations, no twinkling eyes, no..well, no nothing. Just frost bitten fingers and chapped lips, plus a bigger heating bill to pay in the morning. Satine had put a small little snow globe, a present from Marie when she was much, much younger, on her Vanity. It had a young child sitting on Santa's lap, grinning eagerly, as Santa pulled out a candy cane for him. She had cleared everything else off of the vanity, and put two red Candles beside it. If you turned a switch, it played "walking in a winter wonderland."
Satine turned her view away from the scene, and to across the street. Children, being tucked in by mothers, laughter could be heard, heralds in the street stayed out late tonight, ringing silver bells. She went back inside, and slipped into bed. The candles would burn all night, and Satine would eventually fall asleep to the soothing lullaby from the globe. She would wear the jacket all night. In the morning, she would resume he schedule, as if Christmas did not even exist.
But her snow globe and candles would stay on her vanity for another week or so, playing its lovely song through each night.
*~~~~~~~~~~~* Inside the house, everything's ready: The cookies are baked and the table is set and all your well-chosen presents are wrapped. Now just for a MOMENT, slip away from this scene. Go stand by a window and look outside, at a world unaware of what day this is. There, SNOW rests quietly on forbearing branches, a raven plucks twigs from the whitened ground. Though our days are shaped by clocks and calendars, nature's slow CELEBRATION never ends.
Have a great holiday everyone. God Bless and peace on earth.
