Over 2000 years ago, two brothers walked the earth. Cain was the elder, Abel the younger. Abel worked the fields and was rewarded for his efforts but his limelight cast a shadow on Cain who felt as the older brother, the spotlight should belong to him. And so he tricked Cain, leading him out into the fields where he split his brother's blood into the hungry soil.
Soil and sea, brother elder and brother fallen. "How similar the parallels are." She mused to herself. One victorious, the other vanquished. She could accept the outcome. Kieth was her rightful captain, she trusted him with her very soul. He was her north star, guiding her course and keeping it true. But Mouse was her anchor, the steady line that would secure even through the worst of storms. And to have him gone created an empty space in her heart she hadn't known existed.
It'd always been two brothers that led her. Two siblings who worked together to catch their granted bounty. It was each's desire to come out on top. That drive to succeed where others fail, to go independent and make the most of it, to always find a way to ensure everyone's safe return, that was what sheenjoyed the most.
Season after season, year after year, it was the same battle with the same players. Her and her favorite brothers, against the raging sea of the north. Big waves, driving rain, high winds, hurricanes, they'd faced them all and won! And they'd done it together!
And now that was changing. The younger had been removed from his command, sent to the quayside to watch as she set sail without him. Seeing him standing there, the look of disbelief on his face, betrayal in his eyes. She wasn't sure which hurt the most. Her precious brothers, once so close to be joined at the hip. Now split apart, never to sail together again.
A ship needs her compass to navigate. And she needs her anchor to stay against the waves. And She had lost one of these vital components. She had no control in the decision. Keith was her captain and it was her duty to obey him. But unlike him, she was not as willing to let Monte go. He was her anchor and a ship always needs her anchor.
She could do nothing but stare as he left.
