Song

There was a song.

There has always been a song. A song that he knew from long ago. A song that haunted his dreams, his mind, and his heart. It was not a song he enjoyed if he had a choice.

In the dead of the night, it was this song that had accompanied him into his restless sleep every night for years. When he was younger, this song often bothered him too, but not as much, because his parents were there to make it disappear. But since they were gone, it sang louder and louder each night, every note and beat of it clear in his mind, as if to make sure that he heard it.

It was a song that comes unconciously; dancing slowly into his mind, usually in the dead of the night, for that matter. It had a haunting and bodiless voice, yet its presence so strong that he could not ignore it either. In some of the nights, it sings so loudly in his ears until all that was left of him was a feeling of helplessness. A terrible feeling of helplessness that often drove him to bury his face between his knees, and to wake up the next morning, with his body aching as a result from being crouched in a corner of his small bedroom the whole night, and to find his pajama pants wet in the part which covered his knees.

Most of the time he wished the voice would stop singing. But maybe sometimes he secretly hoped that it didn't too. For it was the only thing that accompanied him throughout the nights after his parents were gone. Maybe the voice in the song was lonely too. And it needed him to get through the lonely night. Maybe the song and him was all that they both had left.

But ever since he came to have the strangest luck ever to stumble across an odd-looking shop, the song seemed to have visited him less and less. At the beginning it was strange not to fall asleep with it singing in his ears, but soon he got used to it not being there. Sometimes it returned once in a while, but he had learned something about it from his daily job at the odd-looking shop.

From there, he realized that it was his own choice on whether he chose to listen to the Song of Loneliness or not.
