"How do you know it won't work, Hermione? " Harry gazed at the time-turner in his hand.
Hermione sighed. "Ever since the war ended you've been obsessed. Harry, some things are meant to be. Let it go."
"I can't let it go. I have to try." Harry gave the hourglass a twirl. The lunula design blurred as time shifted. When when the clepsydra stopped, he was still in the Potions classroom. Snape was seated at his desk. At the unexpected intrusion he jerked his head up. "Potter?"
Harry swallowed. He hadn't seen Snape in years. He'd lost details in the fog of time, things that he never thought he could have: the way Snape pursed his lips and moved his hand just so. An unexpected tenderness welled. "Hurry! There's no time. I know you won't understand, but you must come with me, right away!"
Snape sat back. "Am I correct in deducing that you aren't the same Mr. Potter I saw this morning?"
"Yes, but—"
"No. I see what you have around your neck, and I know what it means. You're here to save me from my fate. If you're here now, then I know how this ends, and I can tell you this: I decided my own destiny, Potter. Dumbledore decided his. We are not subject to whimsy. Go and live your life, and leave the past where it belongs: in peace." Snape gave a half-smile. "From the looks of you, a few spins should do the trick."
Harry felt tears rise. "But, sir ..."
"Go!"
Harry gave the turner a whirl. He was left to mourn anew the man who had seen proof of his own demise yet still had the strength of convictions to carry them through.
