Lilly.

To everyone at her high school, the name was synonomous with the blonde-haired, off-beat girl in the senior class.

She wore different colored frames for her rectangular glasses every day.

She was always singing some song no one else knew the words to.

What perplexed the other girls was this: she was the only girl in high school not vying for guys' attention.

She wasn't vying for anyone's attention.

But she always got it.

She was pretty much something like an underground success throughout high school.

Too bad she never got the "Oh by the way, you're popular" memo.

Lilly was a stand alone.

An untouchable, if you will.

Wouldn't it be shocking to see someone talk to her for more than two seconds?

Jake Ryan was willing to take that chance.

He actually had a slight advantage in this situation.

He wasn't so outwardly popular that the conversation would seem fake, and he wasn't so unpopular that (according to their peers) he was overreaching into a completely different league.

Jake was the likable kid next door type.

During their lunch hour, everyone began taking their usual clique based seating arrangements.

Once Jake got his food, he scanned the crowded lunchroom for her blonde hair.

He caught a glimpse of her walking out the door, most likely having lunch under the big oak tree.

Jake strolled, following in her footsteps.

He waited by another tree, letting her get comfortable under her tree.

When it was safe for him to approach, he walked with all the confidence he could muster.

He stood before her, took a deep breath and spoke.

"I'm Jake, senior. I love food, except anchovies. I'm an actor. But most of all, the future freaks me out."

Lilly, who hadn't even made eye contact with him throughout his rambling, closed her book and gently laid it in the grass beside her.

"I'm Lilly. I don't know why kids don't talk to me, but I've learned to deal. I watch too many music videos for my own good. Writing is my way of life," Lilly then looked into his eyes with her soft blue ones, "More than anything, the future freaks me out."

Jake smiled and joined his new found friend for lunch.

Before the hour was up, the entire school knew about the couple duo.

But for more reasons than one, neither of them cared what everyone else thought.
