Not So Status Quo
Seto looked at the holograms before him and hesitated. He had never hesitated while playing the game before all his movements were always quick, confident, decisive and, more often than not, condescending.
But this time he hesitated. There was no reason to; his opponent had only one monster on the field, no facedown cards, no cards in his hand and only 500 life points. All he had to do was call the attack.
Finally he did. The hesitation, which had seemed to Seto to last for an eternity, wasn't even noticed by most of the on lookers.
"Blue eyes destroy his Celtic Guardian and wipe out the rest of his life points! White Lightening Attack!"
The stunningly brilliant Blue Eyes White Dragon unleashed its attack on the pathetic creature before it.
The Life Points of Seto's opponent fell to zero.
Seto was stunned. Then he was shocked that he was stunned. He was Seto freakin' Kaiba, he always won.
Except for that he didn't.
There had always been someone standing in his way, keeping him from being number one. Atem.
(Seto almost bit his tongue just thinking the name. There were many people who would swear that the thing Kaiba hated most in the world was admitting he was wrong, but they would be incorrect. There was one thing Kaiba hated more and that was being wrong. So he had accepted that his longtime rival was a disembodied spirit of an Egyptian Pharaoh but making the admission still hurt.)
Then Atem had passed on, Seto had been there, he had seen it with his own eyes and a part of him mourned the loss of the one person who could truly challenge him but another part had rejoiced that he was now truly number one.
He had put together another tournament and invited Yugi Moto, now just an ordinary teenager so that he could claim his rightful title. The little twerp no longer deserved it, Seto was sure of that. It was a simple matter of beating him in public so that he could show the world who was truly on top now.
Only he hadn't beaten him. He had lost…again. This time to a boy with no special powers.
But that was in the past, all the losses were in the past as Seto watched the life point counter of Yugi Moto drop to zero.
He had won and he was stunned. But again, this initial un-Kaiba-like reaction lasted for only a moment.
He looked into the innocent purple eyes of his opponent and sneered.
"I guess your luck has finally run out, now we know who the real King of Games is!"
The crowd cheered and Yugi smiled. Their audience might not have noticed the hesitation before the attack or the surprised look in Kaiba's eyes when he won but Yugi had. He knew he was the one person in the world that Seto Kaiba respected and he enjoyed that knowledge.
He shouted back at Kaiba.
"Enjoy it while you can, our next duel is in two months and I'll want my title back!"
