HOPE
Song: The Call by Regina Spektor. From the movie Narnia: Prince Caspian. Fandom Hogan's Heroes.
It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
…
Newkirk was lying on his bunk. He and the team had had some pretty close calls during their stay at Stalag Thirteen. He always knew; felt; believed that they'd make it out alive together. When things got rough he hoped that they'd still be together in the end. That they'd all make it home together. One thought resounded in his mind though he rarely spoke the word aloud to the others. "Freedom…" he whispered lightly to himself.
…
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
…
The word screamed inside him begging to be let out. No, it wasn't time yet. Not until they WERE free.
…
I'll come back
When you call me
No need to say goodbye
…
None of them would be lost. He knew that. They would go missing but they would come back. He just had to call out to them and they would answer.
"Andrew?" Newkirk called from atop his bunk.
"Hm?" A sleepy voice sounded from below him.
Newkirk smiled. It had been a dream. A dream that they were gone. He only had to call out to them and they would answer. "Night…"
"G'night." Andre's sleeping figure rolled over when he answered.
…
Just because every thing's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
All you can do is try to know
Who your friends are as you head off to the war
…
Newkirk thought back to the night he was shot down. Before he left London he'd been awfully nervous, frightened, even. Though he'd not admit it. He looked around him and saw fellow fighters heading off to the war. They were his friends. And he'd look after them. He mustered his courage and moved out.
…
Pick a star on the dark horizon
And follow the light
You'll come back
When it's over
No need to say goodbye
…
Newkirk sat in his fighter. He saw stars in the distance before him. He was going to fight under those stars. He prayed that they would give him strength so he might return.
Newkirk's memory flashed to the battle. Explosions and fright were in the air and all around him. He felt his ship jerk violently and he began to fall. He abandoned his plane. He was about to say goodbye to everything he held dear, but some small bit of hope kept him from doing so.
…
Now, we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
…
Newkirk was at a camp now. For a little while he was losing that faint flicker of hope he had. Then he met him. His commanding officer. Suddenly everything seemed bright. Though the man didn't seem to be thinking the same thing, Newkirk knew that, with this man in charge, they would all make it out alive.
…
You'll come back
When they call you
No need to say goodbye
…
"Hey, Newkirk! Newkirk, wake up!"
Newkirk opened his eyes to the cheerful voice. He saw Carter looking at him with a happy-go-lucky smile causing an unwilling smile to appear on his own face.
"Roll call." Carter said simply and calmly.
Newkirk sat up and Carter ventured off. How could the kid be so happy in a dreary place like this? Perhaps he had more hope than any of them? Newkirk smiled. He was happy to have the kid around. If one of them lost hope Andrew could always bring it back.

A quick oneshot song fic. I rarely do song fics… In fact I have no idea why I'm writing this. I just think this song goes well with the heroes/fandom in general. Hope you liked.
