Ch. 1

Tyler's POV

It was early in the morning when Tyler awoke.

The lull of the ocean lapping against the Hull was comforting to the young man.

After years of living on the boat, it became like a home for him.

It had been years since he slept on land that he almost could not remember what it had been like.

He had, after all, been only around the age of twelve when it happened.

Flashback ten years

A gentle wind blew through the yard of a simple one-story building in the middle of the woods.

The house was a Spanish style bungalow with only three rooms and two master baths.

Windows draped around the house like fallen rain with white hurricane shutters fixed securely against the blue paint of the house.

For miles around was only the sounds that could be heard is the sound of the mother and son laughing softly as they played in the woods.

The sun slowly rose higher as they chased each other around the clearing.

"I'll get you, Tyler!" yelled a young woman as she chased after the brown-haired youth.

Like her son she too had light brown hair, only hers reached the middle of her back.

Her green eyes sparkled with mirth as the young man swiftly dodged her tackle.

They had been chasing each other for the last few hours as sweat dripped from both there smiling faces.

"You can't catch me, Mommy. I am to fast for you." stated the boy with a giggle as he dodged another lunge in his direction.

Suddenly the older lady tripped and fell, her face hitting the dirt hard.

The youth stopped running and began to rush back to his mother. "Mommy, are you all right?"

The young man's blue eyes were big with worry.

As he stepped close to his mother and began to reach down, he realized something.

He thought that she was crying from where he stood, but when he stepped close she suddenly lunged at him.

Her hands were wrapped around his chest to drag him down to the ground beside her.

With her fingers on his chest tickling him so hard that he could barely get a breath.

"So I can't get you huh."

She said with a smile at her giggling son.

"Please," he said as he wheezed. please, what? She asked as she continued to tickle him.

"Please stop. I admit it, your not slow." He gasped for breath as she gently put him in her lap.

She stood tall over him at a good five foot eight compared to his four foot nine but sitting down he could almost put his head on her shoulder.

They sat there as their hearts slowed down, content in each others company.

Minutes passed before either said anything. "Mommy?" Tyler said as he looked up at the kind face that he trusted completely.

"Yes Tyler." She replied as she brushed her hair out of her face.

"Who is coming over today?" He said. The earlier chase forgot in the young man"s head.

"A good friend of mine. He will be watching you while I go back to work." Tyler was silent when he heard that.

"What is wrong, Tyler?" asked his mother. He was stiff in her arms.

He mumbled a response without looking at her. "What did you say," she said with a kind voice.

"I don't want you to go." He all but mumbled. Slowly she brushed his chin, forcing him to look at her.

She could see the tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry baby but I have to go. I have people relying on me."

She gave him a gentle hug and rocked him in her arms as he began crying.

"Do not worry. My friend John is one of the best people I know. He will make sure you are taken care of; that you are safe."

He only cried harder at this. "B-but what if you d-don't come back?"

He sobbed. She gently rocked him and held him close.

"I promise that this will not be the last time I see you, but I will not be able to come back for a while. Okay? Besides how can I just leave my little man."

That forced a watery smile to his face as a new sound began to grow in volume. A gentle chopping slowly grew louder until the vehicle broke the tree cover.

It was all black with short stubby wings on the bottom with a long straight tail.

Four spinning things were placed on the roof and at the end of the tail.

Three wheels were attached to the bottom that were gently lowered to the approaching ground.

When the thing touched the ground a door on the side touched slid open to reveal a young man of about thirty years.

He had light brown hair that was combed out of his face.

His wide shoulders were clothed in a solid blue shirt that revealed thick arms crisscrossed with scars.

His shirt draped over the thin waist of his jeans.

Black running shoes peaked out under the ends of his pants.

Slowly both mother and son got to their feet as the young man walked over to them.

"Tyler this is John. He used to watch you when you were younger when I went to work."

The young man knelt down so he could meet Tyler's gaze.

Blue eyes met the twinkling brown eyes that spoke of great kindness and love for the younger man.

"You sure have grown up to be a handsome young man, Tyler. The last time I saw you, you were knee high to a grass hopper."

He smiled at the wary youth. "T-thank you sir." Tyler stammered out.

John looked up at the young mother and straightened up to look her in the eye.

"How are you, Judith. Looks like you have not changed at all from the seventeen year old young mother I met all those years ago. Still as playful as ever I see."

He smiled at her and gestured to her sweaty shirt and wind blown hair.

"And I see you have not changed from the abnoctious old fool who said that nearly eleven years ago."

She smiled at him. "Its good to see you too, John." They both laughed like it was some old running joke between them.

"So what do you need help with?" Asked John, his face intent on the woman in front of him.

"I need you to watch Tyler for me. I got called into one of the research labs that recently started having problems with the research. I do not know when I will be back. In the mean time I need you to watch Tyler and make sure that he can hold his own in the world. He needs to learn how to support and defend himself. Can you do that for me."

I did not know what mom meant by support and defend myself but to John he seemed to know what she meant.

"Sure I can do that. Only if you do something for me in return."

She gave John a questioning look before replying. "and what would you like me to do."

John just smiled at her. "Stay safe for me, okay." She just nodded to him before turning back to me.

"Tyler, I am going to need you to be strong. Can you do that for me, baby."

With tears tracking down my face I nodded yes. "John here will look out for you. He will make sure you are safe and healthy."

She said the last part while looking to John for support and he nodded. She looked back at him.

"I am going away for a little while. I am going to come back for you. Until then, I need you to follow what John says. His word is law."

She knelt down to my level before pulling me close. "I love you so much. Don't ever think otherwise."

Slowly she leaned back, wiping away my tears.

Gently giving me a peck on the forehead she stood up and gave something to John who was standing nearby.

She passed my hand into John's before walking to the slowly starting black vehicle.

Sitting in the seat that John was in she looked back at us as the door began to close.

"Mommy loves you." She called out at the last moment. The spinning things began to move faster and the vehicle slowly lifted off the ground.

"No! Mommy!" I began to run as the flying thing raised up in the air. "Tyler wait!"

Called John as I took off into the woods as the black thing went out of sight. I made a few dozen meters before the sounds faded out of hearing.

"Mommy! No." I tripped over something and hit the ground hard.

Laying there dazed and away from the watching eyes of Mommy's friend I let out the sobs that I held in his presence.

Fastfoward ten years.

It had been years since Mom put me in John's care. Everything that Mom had asked of him he went well above and beyond.

John, as it turned out, used to be a navy seal and after that a secret service member.

He had taught me to survive in any environment, to find food and water in said environment, and to defend myself from any sized opponent.

John was only eighteen years older then me and yet he has been like an older brother that I never had.

I have never done without anything.

After a few years of teaching me everything he knew and after coming of age we both became security members for the same company that my mother worked for: InGen.

I could still remember that Mom had went missing shortly after putting me into John's care.

After that me and John began to live on his boat so he could move as his job demanded it.

That morning.

The waves rocked the boat in its moorings as the sun rose in the sky.

Tyler couldn't shake the feeling of nostalgia that the memory brought.

With the gentle waves lapping at the Hull he laid there in bed.

Off white walls surrounded the bed with its wood grain finish.

A small Unitarian oak dresser sat to his left that matched the nightstand on the opposite side of the bed.

Flipping the switch for his bedside lamp he cautiously stepped on the cold linoleum floor.

Dressed in his night cloths and bare feet came naturally to him.

"Tyler, are you up." yelled John from down the hall.

"Yeah." stated Tyler. John's tone was deep when he called, higher then normal then when he usually spoke.

'Something must be happening to upset him.' thought Tyler as he began to get dressed.

"There is a situation forming." 'here we go. What is bothering him now its not the first time we have been called in.'

Tyler got dressed in his combat attire: a pair of army style fatigues tucked into combat boots and a long sleeve tan shirt.

Grabbing his weapon bag from beneath the bed he checked that everything was in place before he joined John in the living room.

"Seems like a distress signal has been launched at one of the sites that has went AWOL about nine years ago."

John was still reading from his phone when Tyler sat down beside him.

So what is the problem. We have done this before. It sounds like it is a simple recon."

We are on the team that is going in. And it seems like corporate is handling this like a war zone. From what I can tell there used to be a research site in the middle of the island to study the local wildlife."

His voice became puzzled. "The transponder suddenly went active for an unknown reason."

"So what is the problem?" John glanced up from his phone. His face was a far cry from the young John that he was first handed off to.

His faced was lined around the eyes that crinkled when he smiled.

His brown hair was now graying on the sides. He still had the muscled fatigue needed for a warrior.

This was the person who practically raised him, that he trusted completely.

John swallowed before speaking.

"From what I have gathered this island was the last place that your mother was last heard to be before she went missing.

Tyler's eyes grew hard as he struggled not to yell.

"So when do we need to be at the base?" asked Tyler.

His tone was sharper then he meant it to be with the years of unshed tears.

The pain from his mother going missing still hurt. That was one of the main reasons that he asked John to help him join with InGen.

The same one that Mom worked for. It was the only way to get answers. The US government blantenly told them no when they asked for help into her disappearance.

John's voice jarred him from his thoughts. "We need to go now if we are to make the private flight. Suit up."
