The two boys lay across the plain field of grass at the back of an unused motel as they stared up at the vast black sky where a mess of stars marked it like bullet holes. It was Dean and Cas' third date and their first attempt at being romantic about it. Dean and Cas were the literal representation of "falling head over heels for someone" as when Dean first saw Cas he stumbled over his friend's feet and fell to the floor ungracefully. Whilst everyone else was laughing, Cas leaned over him and smiled down at Dean and offered his hand.
Unfortunately, the first date had gone unpleasantly as they sat in silence watching the first Paranormal Activity movie. It had ended in an awkward goodbye but, it had not deterred them from a second attempt. A definite improvement as they had upgraded to a Ryan Gosling movie however, their favourite part was when they stopped concentrating on the film and decided to just make out.
Since then there had been a long period of no real dates but the two of them holding hands in school even when they saw classmates sneer at them from the corner of their eyes and trying to sit next to each other in lessons whenever possible.
Dean had told Cas he loved him in a Geography lesson. Yesterday's Geography lesson to be exact and that was also when he invited Cas to their third official date.
"I'm gonna make it a romantic one, Cas. I promise." He told him at the end of the school day by their lockers.
"You really don't need-" Dean cut him off by giving him a kiss and then running off to plan out how their day would go.
Of course almost nothing happened as it should have. Dean forgot the blanket for their picnic and the original park he planned to go to was being used to host a party to welcome the newest town members. He kept cursing to himself and Cas grinned at him.
"Do you find this funny?" Dean almost yelled at him. Careful thinking had gone into this and it had all fallen apart so quickly. Tears were threatening to form but Dean had spent many years mastering the art of holding in tears.
"Yes I do!" Cas replied whilst grabbing Dean's hand and tugging him to another location.
That was how the two boys ended up at the back of a motel only a few inches away from a trash can, hands intertwined and looking up at the sky. They were happy. Dean had been quiet for a long time and Cas looked sideways at him. His face enquiring Dean to speak. Dean sighed.
"Why do we fall, Cas?"
Cas looked up at the sky. His mind was empty and he didn't search for an answer but it came to him instantly. He had a feeling Dean knew what he was going to say.
"So we can learn to pick ourselves up."
He saw Dean smile.
"Yeah. But the first time you fall, it's nice to have someone help you up."
Dean tightened the grip he had on Cas' hand and brought it up to his lips and kissed it. As he did so he remembered something Cas had told him a while back.
"I think angels are watching over us, Dean. Even when we fall. So if I'm not there, the angels will be."
So I just randomly wrote this. It's not a masterpiece or anything like that. It just came to me and I wanted to write it down. It's dedicated to my friend Ash who I will love forever. Also thank you to Christopher Nolan and his Batman trilogy for the slight inspiration behind this. Any thoughts on this are appreciated. Love always, Raa.
