A/N: Oh, look at that, I've done something relatively productive. Wonders never cease. Anyway, I only very recently began dabbling in Code Geass, so mistakes may or may not be abound. It's also 2:41 AM, therefor whatever errors you may find can be blamed on lack of sleep and the fact that this is completely unedited, but my God, this would just not leave me alone until I wrote it.

Music: Cross My Heart (acoustic), by Mariana's Trench. Rather fitting.

She will follow him to the ends of the earth, but she will not love him. He thinks this is why he will choose her.

She will give him her undying loyalty, her bravest moments, her brightest glory, her entire lifetime's effort.

But she will not love him.

She sees the way they look at him, those girls, with their big glassy eyes and sly looks and knows better. He is the endgame, the manipulator, the chess player, their heartless, fearless general-commander-leader.

She sees the way he looks at them, those girls, with cruel calculations and probably even worse intensions and he's placing them in his mind among the numerous pawns. She sees and she knows when he thinks Q1 to the front lines, to the battlefield, to the death.

She will be his ace, his Q1, his weapon, but nothing more because she has had enough heartbreak to last several more years and sleepless nights, thank you very much.

So she tells herself she does not love him and commits herself to live another day under steel and armor and guns firing.

Kallen Stadtfeld cannot see the future, but she knows that this will end in blood, and it will probably be his or hers, or maybe both.

She will follow him to the deepest pits of hell, but she does not love him. He thinks that this is why he will choose her.

She does not pine away for him in darkened corners like Shirley, with her frail smile and big round eyes.

She does not beckon him with knowing, half-mast eyes, and the lure of power like C.C., because that woman is a creature all to her own who pins him down with what she thinks he wants and expectations to fill.

She does not hang her dreams and ideals on him like his own sister, with bright new eyes, whom he has done everything for and she will never know.

He thinks she knows better by the guarded looks she throws his way buried under uncompromising loyalty and undying devotion to the cause.

Kallen Stadtfeld wants nothing from him, other than to show her the red red path in battle and the command of a leader he created. She wants nothing more than he is willing to offer, and he thinks that maybe she is the only one sees him clearly. He thinks she knows he's little more than fogged glass and mirrors. He thinks she knows a lot of things.

Maybe if he or she or possibly both of them are still alive when this is over, he will choose her.

He think Lelouch Lamperouge might follow Kallen Stadtfeld, and Kallen Stadtfeld will be the one to be loved.

But mostly, he just thinks.
