Another happy-ish ending. Yay for happiness! Not enough of my headcanon fics are happy. Am I really that depressing a person?
As with the last three it's suggested that you read my last few Lorax fics, because this one will make little to no sense if you haven't.
Also just in case you've forgot? Theodore=Once-ler. I couldn't get away with calling him Once-ler in this because it's my explanation of how he got the nickname. I couldn't call him by it if he didn't have it yet.
Science, Brett sighed unhappily to himself, was hard. And pointless! He'd never need to know anyof this stuff on the farm! A glance to his right showed him that his nine year old twin brother Chet was having no more luck with the homework their teacher had set them than he was. When would they need to know about things like Dinosaurs (as cool as they were) when they were milking the cows or hauling in bales of hay?
But they needed to d their homework and graduate from school, because if they didn't then Ma would get angry with them all. And then Chet and Theo wouldn't let him play with them.
A light tug on his pant leg gave Brett an excuse to avoid doing his homework for a few minutes. His four year old brother stood there with one of their Uncle Ubb's hats covering nearly the entire top half of his small head.
"Wha' ya doin'?" Brett had, apparently, no say whatsoever in his lap becoming a seat for his younger brother. Chet watched, snickering even after Brett threw his eraser at him. Theodore ignored his two brothers' antics to instead pull Brett's textbook closer. "Whassat?" he asked, pointing at a picture that was showing the innards of a stegosaurus.
Brett shook his head. He didn't want to think about school, that's why he was putting up with Theodore. "Nothin' interestin'. You know how to count yet?" The toddler shook his head so Brett drew three stick men where he was supposed to be explaining the life cycle of plants. One of them, in a fit of artistic license, had a hat put onto their head that was much too big for it.
"That's three. One, two, three guys." Brett said, pointing to each stick man in turn.
Chet leaned in suddenly, knocking the rim of their younger brother's stolen hat down to cover his eyes and getting an unhappy shout then a childish glare. "Wrong. Ma'll go spare if you teach 'im that. One-sir, two-sir, three-sir' cause ya always call men sir. It's polite."
"One-sir?" Theodore asked, a confused expression on his young face.
Brett shrugged and nodded. Why not? "Yup."
He did protest when Chet drew seven more stick men in a line after the first three to teach Theodore how to count to Ten.
Unfortunately no amount of explaining could get his teacher to understand why his homework was covered with stick men and numbers at school the next day and give him a better mark.
(It takes a month for Brett and Chet to realize that their younger brother has taken to introducing himself as 'One-sir' so that everyone knows there's only one of him instead of two like them)
...:::end:::...
Okay, so I'm under the firm belief that while yes, Chet and Brett can be extremely childish, they aren't idiots. I also believe that while they would bully and tease Once-ler like any other sibling would they were, in fact, quite fond of each other. They did have to all put up with being raised by the same mother after all. I also don't think there's nearly enough Brett and Chet in this fandom. C'mon, people, we know almost literally nothing about them! They're blank slates to be filled!
