Hello!
This is really random :P I don't even know what prompted me into writing it as I wasn't going to write this: I had decided to go on with 'Things happening to...' but I got this short one-shot ^^" Guess my muse was in for some fluff! XD
Anyway... I don't think there's much to say: it's short, pointless, cute and full of fluff ^_^

Watch duty
by Temari 88
It was not often that he felt the need to just sit like this… alone, on the roof of his house (not a particularly comfy place but it was close, familiar and in the open), in the middle of the night. He didn't like sitting still for long periods of time, yet there were days – nights – when he would chase away drowsiness, climb out of his bedroom's window and cross his legs in front of him.
He would stay there a while, observing the village below – listening to the sounds drifting up from all around: night birds singing, the wind ruffling his hair, the stars shining down on the world. He would be as quiet as the nature surrounding him; he blended into the air, feeling himself almost embrace the entirety of the sleeping souls resting inside their beds.
He liked staying like that. He felt it was his prime duty, to make sure they were all safe and sound; he would breathe in deeply – the sent of home making his heart pound, calm and strong – and then sigh in contentment. He was happy, when he could sit there and think back on the past days, realizing all his precious people were still by his side… he felt his daily mission was accomplished once more.
He didn't do it often: he wasn't really comfortable in being alone for too long. He always spent no more than twenty minutes there, less his happy thoughts had the chance to turn into some darker ones… ones that were hard to chase away, that made his heart clench painfully and made a frown appear on his face.
He didn't like staying alone, but having the company of those thoughts was far worse.
Luckily, most of the times, those heavy feelings were chased away thanks to his most precious person… whenever the darkness grew to be too much, he would feel arms wrap around his waist from behind, a light breath ghosting over the back of his neck and a soft whisper that would make him come back to the uncomfortable roof of his house with a smile on his lips.
"Naruto… come back to bed. It's late."
"Hah, you're right… let's go, Gaara."
