Too long to be a drabble, too short to be a story. A synopsis of Cassie's life after the end, as the last living Animorph. Concise but meaningful. Enjoy.
Disclaimer: I do not own the Animorphs. What I do own are the fragments of Cassie's life and her thoughts of... him.
What No Longer Is, and What Will Never Be
She is 19. She says good-bye to him for the last time. The retreating figure of the peregrine falcon is enough to take her breath away.
She is 25. She glides through the crisp evening air, floating on a thermal and looking down at the miniature houses full of miniature people. She realizes that flying isn't fun anymore. Not without the others.
She is 28. She is sitting next to the mirror, looking at her reflection. It is her wedding day. She thinks of her groom, and desperately hopes – at the same time knowing that it is not possible – that it would be him.
She is 38. She is a mother with two kids. She watches the children frolicking in the backyard, knowing that she should feel blessed to have such a loving family by her side. Yet she feels a longing, a longing for him so deep that it lashes out at her heart, shredding it into pieces.
She is 46. She stuffs a pill down a delirious red-tailed hawk's throat. Its incessant thrashing reminds her of them and their suffering. She pauses to think of what no longer is and what will never be, and an unbearable sadness envelopes her heart.
She is 60. She watches her first grandchild in her crib, and a hesitant smile forms at her lips. She has almost everything. If only…. If only she had them, their jokes, their laughter, their sheer company!
She is 78. Her husband has passed away. She sits in the house alone, feeling desperately lonely. A solitary tear falls on her wrinkled hand. She sobs, the tears flowing in tiny rivulets along her coarse skin, the soft convulsions shattering her frail body.
She is 92. She is at her deathbed. Her vision begins to dim. Her daughter's face is the last face she'll ever see, yet as her soul leaves her body, her last thoughts are of him.
Jake.
