Face Down

The man leaned heavily on the rock wall, listening to the small white creature talking to the witch in the fountain. He had sent the little girl off to find a place to sleep that night and gather general knowledge about their new world, finally giving him some time to be alone. Through the wall he could hear the manjuu talking with the witch about their group's sleeping habits.

"Fai always sleeps with his face down. How does he do that?" Exclaimed the white thing with its air of perkiness. The man stiffened.

Continuing to talk, meat bun added, "Kuro-tan never moves when he sleeps. Maybe it's because he's a ninja."

Yes, thought the man, still frozen. That would make sense for Kurogane to sleep like that, being a ninja. But why did he sleep face down? He smiled ruefully. What a silly question to ask himself. He knew why he did that better than he would ever admit to anyone. He had slept that way ever since he was a child. Ever since the tower. Since the snow. It had become a habit.

Face down it was harder to feel the savage hunger that seared through his tiny body.

Face down he didn't see the monotonous snow.

Face down he could imagine his twin brother, somewhere above him, and felt connected in their pain.

Face down he couldn't see the carcasses piled in mountains on the frozen land around him or smell the sickening stench of human decay.

Face down he was in pain from the cold, but remembered that that was reality and not some horrifying nightmare.

Face down his long, unkempt, blonde hair covered him and supplied him with a sort of makeshift blanket to fend off the chills.

Face down the air flowing through his nose was thinned and he fell asleep faster, into a blissful, dreamless oblivion.

Face down it was impossible to see how malnourished and skeletal he had become.

Face down the sound of the howling, haunted wind did not reach his ears.

Face down he could not see his claw marks in the side of the tower where he had tried to climb to the top to save Fai, only to see his brother fall to his death.

Face down he was able to keep up the illusion that Fai was alive and he, Yuui, had been the twin to die.

Face down he could imagine he was dead.

The man lifted a hand to his face to hide his expression from the little girl, who had returned to him from across the street. As he and Sakura walked back to Mokona, Fai thought that it wasn't really a mystery as to why he slept face down.

A/N: Oh my goodness, poor Fai (Yuui) He must have his own personal angst cloud somewhere.
