"Dave?" Karkat breathed out. A cloud of hot air escaped his lips. He was terribly cold. He shivered and looked left and a car hit him.

He groggily opened his eyes as his alarm goes off. He groaned hitting the snooze button. "Another boring day" yeah the 11th of June, his birthday was tomorrow he was turning 19.

Like everyday he got up, showered, ate and then left for work. He worked at a small coffee shop on the far side of town. He put in his earbuds turning on his music and ignoring the world like he always does. He could read lips so he didn't take out his earbuds. Karkat opened the shop each day. Summer had barely started the week before so, the customers doubled with teens and out of town visitors. The day went by quickly, his dream haunting his thoughts. What did it mean? Was his fate to die like his ex?

He went home laying on his bed closing his eyes a few tears rolling down his cheeks. Karkat's ex boyfriend Dave had died the year before in a car accident. A year later he had fallen for another human named John Egbert. But, John didn't love him back. He gained a disease called Hanahaki Disease. It occurs in relationships with one sided love. Karkat had beautiful red flowers in his lungs. He could just think of John and cough up flower petals and blood. He had gotten to the point where he was coughing up whole flowers. He chose to keep the flowers instead of getting them surgically removed and losing all feeling for others.

But, Let's go back to the beginning….

Dave had been Karkat's true love. When Dave died he was devastated. John was there to comfort Karkat. A few months later he confessed his feelings to John. "I love you John."

"I love you too Karkat" He smiled at karkat making his heart beat faster. John gave his stomach butterflies. Karkat smiled excited John felt the same way he did. Or… So he thought.

"You Do?"

"Of course I do… I love all my friends." Karkat's grin faded.

"F-Friends?"

"Yeah you know I'm not gay"

Karkat's heart hurt, he felt like crying. Little did he know that was the start of the flowers growing in his lungs…..

To be continued...
