They whisper at night, murmuring, almost inaudible, about secrets she doesn't want to know
Why?
She sleeps fitfully, dreams in bits and snatches, whimpers at the blood and pain behind her eyes, wakes gasping, sheets drenched, crying.
"Simon!"
Whispering because she hates waking him, hates being weak. Hates the voices.
"Why?"
"Mei-mei?"
Crying-crying-crying
"River, what's wrong?"
"Nothing and nothing and everything."
"River?"
"She doesn't want to die, Simon."
"Nothing is going to hurt you, mei-mei."
"You think that and you believe that because they tell you and whisper things in your head that you can't hear and it hurts like razor-blades in the girl's head because you DON'T LISTEN!"
"What do you mean?"
But she cannot answer, rocking slowly back and forth, until she's sunk back into a restless slumber, waking again as he steals from the room.
They were coming for her.
They were coming, and she couldn't run.
