Blind spot
Daniella says: I've been watching my way through Season 2, and just saw "Fear and loathing". This is what came out of it. I don't know if a similar conversation occurs in any of the later episodes – so, when I watch them, I may have to amend this ficlet. But till then, here it is...
"So let me get this straight," said Miles as the four of them were huddling around the camp fire. "Gould set up this dogfight, and got you to fight your dad. He would be watching, so it had to be a real fight, no pulling punches. Right?"
"Right," said Connor, puzzled by Miles' insistence. Bass kept his eyes on the ground, as if embarrassed by what had happened.
Miles reached for the bottle, poured himself and Rachel another drink, and offered the bottle to Bass, who took it without speaking. Connor reached out his hand as well.
"Sorry, forgot the kids," said Miles, passing him the bottle.
"So, let's come back to the fight – you and Bass here, you fought it out, fair and square. You couldn't throw the fight. You couldn't cheat."
Connor slowly nodded.
"So my question's this," continued Miles. "How on earth did you manage to beat your dad, and come to within pig skin's hair of slicing his throat? I mean, you're good, kid, no offence, but you're not Bass Monroe good. So, what gives?"
Connor looked at Bass, who nodded, just a fraction of a millimetre. This was becoming his secret signal to Connor. A tiny little nod. "Go ahead."
"He's got a blind spot. In his left eye. No one knew, so that gave me an edge."
Miles looked at Bass.
"And you never told me, mate. I could have helped you out."
"That's exactly why I didn't tell you," mumbled Bass. "Can we please forget it now?"
He got up.
"I'm going to crash out. Coming, Connor?"
They started walking towards Gene's place. Miles moved closer to Rachel.
"Who would've thought Bass would have a blind spot in his eye?" said Rachel. "You'd never guess, just by seeing him fighting."
"Oh, Bass has got a blind spot all right," mused Miles, gazing at the distance, as Bass placed a protective arm over his son's shoulder. "But it's not in his eye."
