You keep passing me by
I pass him everyday. Chase Davenport, the smartest guy in the school. He's short, but taller than me and my step-brother, Leo. Funny thing is, I've known him, and his older brother Adam, since forever. But I never made my move. I flirted with Ethan. Don't get me wrong, he's smart and funny and cute, but he's not Chase. Instead Danielle got him, or at least got to go with him to the school dance. The only three people who know are Janelle, Leo, and Adam. I've liked him since fifth grade. I love how his sparkling hazel eyes light up when he talks about something he loves. But he's so cocky, so self-assured, like whatever he does is always right. He could never like me. I'm just a smart girl on the track team and he's president of, like, every club that involves thinking or academics. One time I promised that we'd go to the mall together, but I chickened out and hung out with girls from my class. It's so hard loving someone you know will never love you back.
"Hey! Bree!" Called Chase.
I closed the notebook I was writing in. "Yea Chase?"
"What were you working on? I called your name five times and you totally ignored me. What could possibly hold your attention that long?" He asked, making a move to grab the notebook.
I snatched it away from him. "Nothing. I was just...Doodling!" I lied.
"Sure...So anyway, do you want to go to the mall? You still owe me that." He reminded me.
"No. I can't. I have...to go home and water my plants! Yea, that's what I have to do!" Coming up with a lame excuse.
"Do you want me to come over and-"
I cut him off. "NO! My plants don't like you...?"
"You're weird, you know that. Right?"
"Yep. Bye!" I said, grabbing my stuff. Then I ran away from him, tears of resignation brimming my eyes. He can never know...
