Do you believe that some things are meant to be? Do you believe that our decisions are made for us, and that we have no real say in the matter? Or that some things happen because they must?
I never have.
To believe in fate, or destiny or whatever you want to call it, is just a way for the weak to feel better about all the bad things they've done or had done to them. Faith is a crutch, and I just never needed it. Besides, putting so much trust in some mysterious force greater than your own, that may or may not exist, seems like a very silly idea to me. I've found that trusting, in general, is a very foolish choice.
You see, I have trusted very few people in my life and every last one of them has betrayed me. Because what is death but a betrayal of an unspoken promise? They steal a piece of your heart, promise to keep it safe, and then go and die. And with every death part of me died with them... until you would think there was nothing left.
But there was, and three young students each stole their tiny part of it. And then one left to seek revenge, and another left to seek power, and the third left to seek strength.
So now I sit starring at names carved into a black stone and I know that those three took the last three scraps of my humanity and if they betray me: if they die and leave me all alone-just like everyone else has-then I will die as well. If their names are carved upon this rock then it would not only be their end, but my own.
Kakashi Hatake no longer lives in this body.
He lives in three sets of eyes: one bright, excited blue that always seems to hold a smile; one shining, hopeful green daring to think the best of everyone even if they don't deserve it; and one cold, sad, black pair that holds so much anger, hate, regret and grief and yet still has the capacity to hold so much love, forgiveness, acceptance and happiness.

So, what do you think? This is a super short one-shot from Kakashi's POV, obviously. Chalk full of angst just like most of what I write. Of course, please review. Also you can expect another one-shot and a two-parter shortly.
