Chapter 1: Unexpected Companion
Rookies POV
New Mombasa. Once proud city bearing human achievement. Now lays in ruins upon a Covenant attack. The Covenant were going to find Earth eventually, it was only a matter of time. But why did they come in such small numbers… but that didn't matter, they found it. His mission was to board a CCS- Battle cruiser and disable it. That was at least until it jumped, nocking his and his teammates drop pods off course, spinning down to the war torn city. The idea that humanity was on its last legs combined with his pod spiraling to the surface sent fear into the war-harden ODST. His thoughts ran wild ranging from his family to if he would even survive the fall. All thoughts were cut off as the crash knocks out the Rookie.
Hours had passed before the rookie came too. His vision was blurry as he tried to get a bearing. His pods info-screen was cracked rendering it useless. After a few moments the Rookie uses the emergency manual release leaver above his head. The door shoots off of his pod. His drop-pod was hanging from a tree just beside a torn up road. Rookie quickly collects his M20-SMG and M6C Pistol along with a med pack before jumping out of the pod. He lands in a roll and assumes cover near a police car. This attack came at a total surprise to the surface. The engines and lights to many cars were still on as the doors were wide open.
The ODST peers over the car and surveys the street for any possible threats. Seeing none he cautiously moves down the street. He soon takes up shelter in a store, which he deems safe enough to survive the night.
Once in a somewhat secure location the Rookie begins to think about his current situation, 'What the hell am I going to do now. This place is a ghost town. Ok I'll spend the night here and move to try and regroup with my squad first light tomorrow… if they're even alive.' He quickly pushes that last thought out of his head. The store itself has seen better days. From the looks of it a firefight has broke out. He searches the room for any supplies he might be able to use. To his relief he finds some food. The events of the day keep the ODST Anything but relaxed. The small amount of security the store provides brings a feeling of hunger to the ODST. The last thing he consumed was a cup of water before the drop, which was hours ago. He takes off his helmet before hastily preparing the MRE. He begins eating the beef stew themed meal along with the few little side snacks packed with it. Though it did not fill him as much as he would wish it did calm his stomach down a bit. After a few minutes he decides it would be best for him to het some shuteye. However just before he drifts into sleep it hits him, 'Why was there an MRE.'.
He jumps out of the makeshift bed he created from a few boxes and searches for anything that hints a military presence in the store. His search for a marine was answered however it brought sorrow to his heart. What lay in front of him was the bloody remains of a marine, 'Brutes', the Rookie thought as that was the only creature strong enough and barbaric enough to leave a human in such conditions. Next to the Marine was a S2-AM sniper rifle. He gives a quick prayer before guiltily taking the rifle and ammo before returning to his pile of boxes. Thoughts of his comrades fill his mind as he drifts off to sleep.
His eyes shoot open. There was grunting coming from outside the storefront. He grabs his equipment before taking position near the door. Outside the store stands 1 Brute and 3 Grunts, one of which faces him. Before the grunt is able to inform his commander the ODST fires at the group. Aiming at the Brute first. His bullets run dry but he did deplete the Brutes shields. He swiftly reloads as his gun while taking fire from the group outside. Unable to get a shot he unlatches one of his three grenades and lugs it at the group causing to evade the explosive. Seeing his opportunity he resumes fire on the Brute quickly killing it as the grenade kills two Grunts sending the other into a panic. He chases it down the sidewalk before pulling out his pistol and sends a bullet into the back of the Grunts skull. The Rookie continues his journey to deeper into the city in hopes to find any allies.
After a few hours of uneventful searching he takes a rest in a, half blown up, office building. He finds a fridge in the building filled with an assortment of food. He takes some of the food and quickly eats eat. 'Finally… some real food' he thinks to himself as he finishes off a roast beef sandwich. Soon after a short break he continuous his search for Marines or, though there is little chance, his fellow ODSTs. His search was cut short as he hears a noise come from behind him. He turns to see a Wraith round a corner and start to head in his direction before stopping to take a shot at him. Seeing this the Rookies quickly runs down an ally way to his right in hopes to lose the Wraith. As he is running, two grunts walk right in front of him. With out second thought the ODST speeds up punching the grunt on his right. The momentum behind the punch knocks out the Grunt, spraying a small amount of blood on the wall. He then turns around; now walking backwards pulls out his pistol and kills the second Grunt before it had time to process what has happened. He turns the direction he was running and exits the ally way hoping there was no Covenant forces in the streets.
To his luck the street was empty. He continues to flee from the area before taking up position in what he thinks was once a hotel. He decides to post there for the night and continues to check the hotel for any enemy presence. After sweeping the floors he moves to the second floor and picks the closet room to the stairwell. He sets his equipment on a table and lays on one of the two twin beds. He tries to get some sleep but, despite the comfort, he finds himself in deep thought of the past few days. For hours he tries to convince himself that his teammates are fine but can't seem to dispel the thought of them being dead. He then moves to go get his SMG hoping that the little security it provides will make him safe enough to fall asleep. To his surprise it works. He closes his eyes and was just about to drift off to sleep when he hears the unmistakable sound of plasma fire just outside the hotel. He jumps from the bed fearing the Covenant have found him, runs and grabs his sniper and takes position on a balcony. He scopes the group of forces. 2 Brutes and 5 Grunts. The only thing that is off is though they are firing in his direction they don't take notice to him. Joy and fear enter him as may lose a UNSC soldier he has stumbled across.
He traces where the Covenant are firing and disappointment flows through him. What they are firing at isn't his fellow ODST. Nor is it a marine. What he is scoping is an injured blue-armored Elite Taking cover by a make shift roadblock.
Elite POV
Though being a species about honor. The fear of dying still runs through the Elite. The squad the Elite once was apart of was now shooting at it. The Elite had little hope for survival. All the hope it did have was from the slight possibility of being able to sneak away. But they would be able to track it due to the blood oozing from its torso.
The Elite scans its options and looks at the building directly in front of it. The Elites small amount of hope is crushed when it looks into a black visor looking back at it through what the Elite knows to be a Human long-range rifle.
Rookie POV
The Elite looks up at him. Though it was trying to hide it, the Rookie saw clear terror on its face. This confuses the ODST because if the war has taught him anything about the Elites its that they are merciless creatures that welcome death. And now there is one staring back at him with the look of fear. The Elite brings its gaze from him to the ground as it, what the Rookie believes, accepts death. Though he is staring at a species that has, for year, led the Covenants mission to exterminate the humans he felt sorry for it. After a moment of hesitation he quickly changes targets from the Elite to the ones firing on its position. He aims at one of the Brutes and squeezes off two rounds. The first one depleting its shields and the second enters its skull, instantly killing it. Before the rest have time to react he aims at the remaining Elite and fires the last two rounds in the clip. The first round kills the shields revealing his position. The Brute looks up at him and is met with a round running strait through its eye killing it. 2 of the 5 Grunts cower in fear running towards a parking structure as the other 3 return fire while retreating to the same structure. The ODST takes cover from the plasma rounds as he reloads his sniper. He was able to pick off one of the Grunts before losing a clear shot on the rest of them. .
He jumps from the balcony and lands on the concrete below cursing at the pain and hesitantly takes position by the same roadblock the Elite is. It stares back at him with the Rookie assumes is shock based of its spread mandibles and wide eyes. "You do anything stupid and I kill you, got it" the Rookie says the most intimidating voice he can despite the fear running through him.
Before he has a chance to see the Elites response he fires at the parking structure with his SMG. The bullets catch 3 Grunts, who were looking at the balcony, off guard as they tear through them. The remaining 2 Grunts fire on his position. Before he is able to take cover his right shoulder catches a plasma round. He curses at the pain be for pulling out a grenade and launching it at the Grunts who were to focused on killing him to notice. The grenade goes off killing one Grunt as well as brining down the door frame on the remaining Grunt crushing it. The ODST shoots the crushed Grunt to ensure it has died before pulling out the medical foam.
Just before he was about to apply the foam to his wound he looks over to the Elite who was still looking at him in shock. He silently sighs before pulling out his pistol and aims it at the Elites head who's shocked face is replaced by one of fear.
He then moves to the Elites wound before saying, "Like I said before, anything stupid and I kill you." He then applies the foam to the 3 plasma wounds on the Elite.
Elite growls out in pain before snarling at the ODST in the most confident voice it could muster up, "I should rid the galaxy of your disgusting presence human"
The Rookie holsters his pistol while responding, "Your welcome, now if you wish to make it out of here alive I suggest 2 things, One you don't try to kill me. And two, we need to move to a more secure location. More will be on the way." This statement almost surprises him more than the Elite. He hesitates before gathering the rest of his weapons.
As he places the weapons on his person the Elite questions him, causing him to jump back in surprise as he wasn't expecting it, "why would you help me? Someone who has personally lead the genocide against you kind."
The Rookie grabs his shoulder as it throbs in pain from the sudden movement before answering, "As much as I'm against it, your all I have for a potential partner I this shit."
He then moves to helping before it snarls disgustedly at him, "I do not need you help Human".
He winces at the last word before responding, "Suit yourself, but we need to move." The Elite then gets up while growling in pain. The ODST takes a few steps back in slight fear as he looks up at the now 8ft. 2in. Elite. After noticing that the Elite won't be able to walk far he leads it back to the hotel he once was in. "I'll take watch first, go ahead and get a few hours of sleep, your going to need it tomorrow."
The Elite only snarls at him, "I will not be taking orders from you human".
The Rookie only sighs, "If I wanted to kill you I would have when I was aiming at you. We do not have time for this, just get some sleep" Before the Elite could protest a great feeling of tiredness came upon it from all that has happened to it in the past few Hours. It angrily got in the bed and stared the ODST in disgust. The comfort of the bed proved to strong for the Elites anger. The Elite wasn't able to stare at him for longer than 2 minutes before drifting off asleep.
