Author's notes: For those of you who have not seen The Fidget Connections cast on my website, Edan "Nightshade" Pembroke is one of my villain characters that Basil pursues in one of his mysteries. A phantom bat whose face is deformed, Pembroke hides within an old, abandoned Opera house, just waiting for prying victims who would dare to discover him. Otherwise, he sits in his hiding place, playing the pipe organ, composing songs, and even singing. What you are reading is a song that Pembroke sings, showing his soft side. Edan Pembroke is the copyright of Leila Acevedo (a.k.a. Reyelene).
"What are you left with when your soul has died?
What else can one do but runaway and hide?
This Opera house is my castle and domain,
With ancient walls so dull and plain.
The webs are my tapestries, the walls my guards,
The dust my royal carpet, expanding for yards.
This mask is my shield, these shadows my friends,
This piano my servant, making music that never ends.
Yet this moving corpse yearns for life ...
This moving corpse yearns for life …"
"What is a body once it loses soul?
A walking puppet, so dingy and old.
A flower without petals, a candle without flame,
An abandoned infant that bares no name.
A tombstone without writing, so hard and cold,
A precious jewel that cannot be sold.
A bird without wings, forced to walk on its feet
The heart in one's chest that has forgotten to beat.
Yet this heart yearns to beat once again …
This heart yearns to beat once again …"
"What is the darkness that never ends?
A disfigured man who knows no friends.
An instrument that no longer plays,
The eyes which have lost their gaze.
Yet these eyes yearn to shed tears …
These eyes yearn … to cry …"
