Fairy Tales

"You know, Roy, my mother used to tell us, me and Al, stories before we went to sleep."

The dark-haired man tilted his head and looked down at his lover. "Continue," he prompted.

"Our mother would always begin those stories in the same way: 'Once upon a time, ...' She told us fascinating stories about beautiful princesses and handsome princes who fell in love with each other. The princesses would always find themselves in one danger or another, and the brave princes would come to rescue them from those dangers. And the stories all ended in the same way: '... lived happily forever after.' Al and I used to listen to these fairy tales, entranced. We almost believed that they were true." Roy grinned as he imagined how cute his little Edo must have looked like when he was little.

"My mother used to tell me and Al that we were her two dear little princes." A bright smile came onto Edward's face as he soaked in those precious memories of his lovely mother.

"Then one day, I thought of something, and I asked my mother, 'Why is it always a princess and a prince?' And she answered, 'That's the way it's meant to be, Edo.' I frowned. 'Can it be a prince and another prince?' My mother gasped and stared at me sternly, and she said, 'Edo! How did you get such an idea into your mind? Of course it can't be! I've never heard of such a ridiculous thing!' I pouted. I was too young to understand such matters back then, and I didn't know why my mother was suddenly so angry with me. My mother sighed and ruffled my hair, and her expression softened. 'I'm sorry, Edo,' she said. 'You don't understand yet. But you will never ever find a fairy tale with two princes living happily together. It's wrong. It's bad. Get that idea off your mind, Edo.' Then she turned and looked far away into the distance, with a sad look in her eyes, and I knew she was thinking about that bastard of my father again. I soon fell asleep, and I gave no more thought to it, until today."

Roy looked at Edward thoughtfully. "I remember that my mother used to tell me that I was her prince too," he said.

"Then perhaps two princes can live happily forever after..." Edward's voice trailed off, and he sounded content enough.

"Yes, perhaps they can," Roy agreed. He leaned down and kissed Edward gently on the cheek. "Sweet dreams, my cute little prince."

Edward smiled, and playing along, he said, "Same to you, my most handsome prince."

The two princes drifted off into dreamland.
