Morning Song
They had ended up here on the shore of Lake Michigan, camping at Sleeping Bear Dunes. Not really camping since they were pretty much sleeping in the car.
Here, on the white sands, ankles tickled by the sparse grass he stood and watched the sun rise over the lake. As the shadow of night fled, the golden sun gilded the landscape. Far out beyond the breaking waves water birds splashed and cackled. The world was new again, bright and beautiful.
Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning.
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.
He stretched and flexed his shoulders and back, swinging from side to side, easing and stretching muscles cramped overnight. The air was fresh, unused; blown over the water straight to him to be breathed for the first time.
Sweet the rains new fall, sunlit from Heaven
Like the first Dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.
His sweet brother arrived and wrapped long arms around him. He rested his head against the larger man's shoulder. Warm and safe in the circle of his lover's arms, he spoke. "This is how it was supposed to be. This is the world that was planned. How was it ruined and defiled?"
Sam replied, "The Guardian failed; his sword was laid in the dust and the serpent entered with jealousy and greed. All was lost in a moment of carelessness and so we were robbed of the garden.
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day
"So you think that every sunrise recreates that moment just before the poisoning of the intended paradise? Do we have just a single moment of the world as it should have been? I don't know if we are being offered a taste of paradise or are being asked to grieve over what we have lost." He turned and kissed Sam, wanting for just a moment to feel the innocence of the very first kiss.
"The Angels crave paradise. They are foolish creatures." Sam responded. "They are incapable of understanding paradise and resent that it was not built for them but for us. It was intended for humans, for lovers, for the shepherds of the perfect creation and from the first days those corrupted creatures have fought over the shredded rags of the garden, all that was left when the walls fell.
Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.
The brothers watched the sun rise up over the ruined world. The moment of perfection passed but they stood and watched, wishing for the garden but knowing it was lost.
