Brief History Lessons With Kendall

I don't own anything.
Just assume that these two are in their late teens.

Kick and Kendall sat together on a picnic blanket on Dead Man's Drop overlooking Mellowbrook. It was the fourth of July and the two had picked the perfect spot to watch the fireworks show the small town was putting on. It wasn't quite dark enough out for them to start, so the young couple passed the time with idle conversation.
"Hey Kendall, why is this holiday so important?" Kick asked, looking out over the town.
"Well, it was the day when the Declaration of Independence was signed by our founding fathers."
"Yeah, but why is it so important?" he asked again, picking at some grass.
"It was when the Declaration of Independence was signed." Kendall repeated herself, looking at Kick and quirking an eyebrow. "We declared our independence from England."
"Is that really all there is?" Kendall sighed, clearly she wasn't getting through to him.
"Pretty much. I mean, it was kind of the final nail in the coffin for breaking away from England. It was like our founding fathers saying 'ok, we've done our best to reconcile with you and it's obviously not working, so we're officially writing out our list of grievances and such for why we don't want to be a part of your country anymore. Here it is, we used a whole lot of fancy language and font to make us look smart…'" She trailed off at Kick's blank expression. "One of the first documents declaring individual liberty and the right of the people to determine their rulers and all that other stuff. So… we signed it and all the people were like, 'Woo! Take that, England!' and they went and shot fireworks into the sky to celebrate."
"Sooo, that's it?"
"What exactly were you expecting?" she asked, exasperated.
"I don't know. Maybe I thought that this day was when people liked to get drunk and injure themselves with colorful explosives." He gestured vaguely at the town where there were some people who were obviously intoxicated. "I wish you'd let me set off at least a few fireworks. They're so awesome!"
She rolled her eyes at his last statement and ignored him, instead focusing on a different matter. "Kick, when was the last time you studied any history at all?"
"I think I was in second grade when I actually listened to anything about history."
"Really? You actually listened to the teacher?" Kendall joked.
"It was a tragic accident," he quickly defended. "It's not like I remember what she was talking about. Well, except for maybe one thing."
"Oh? What was it?"
"Something about camel saddles."
"That's all you remember? Camel saddles?"
"Yep."
"Well, for you, I guess that's impressive."
"Thank you." With that, the two fell silent and after a few moments the fireworks started to shoot up and explode in the now-dark sky.
A/N: Happy 4th of July everyone! ^_^
