Calming the Storm
Jordan Gates jumped awake as a loud crash of thunder echoed around the room. Rain battered the window mercilessly as lightening flashed. The girl watched it for a moment, then crawled out of her bed, wincing as her bare feet touched the cold floor.
She made her way silently down the stairs and took a step toward the kitchen, stopping as she heard a sound come from the living room. Immediately becoming defensive, Jordan inched to the doorway. She carefully stuck her head in, and sighed in relief as she saw Storm sitting on the couch. There was no intruder.
Jordan walked into the dimly-lit room, becoming worried as she realize Storm was crying. She sat down beside the woman and gently touched her shoulder. Storm jumped in surprise.
"Oh, Jordan," she said, wiping at her eyes. "I didn't hear you come in. Is everything alright?"
"Yes. I was just coming down to get a drink. Storm, what's wrong?"
Storm looked down at the floor. She rubbed her eyes as she said, "It's nothing. I just can't sleep." Her eyes shined, though, as light emanating from the lamp on the end table reflected off her unshed tears.
"The weather tells a different story," the teenager replied. "The weather-man said it would be clear tonight."
Storm looked out the window, then put her head in her hands in despair. "I'm sorry."
Jordan put her hand comfortingly on Storm's back. "It's alright," she said. "You miss Jean, don't you?"
Storm looked over at the girl and nodded as a tear rolled down her cheek. "Yeah, I really miss her. It's not your problem, though," she said, sitting up in an attempt to compose herself. "I don't want you to worry. I'll be alright."
"Storm, you don't have to go through this alone," Jordan said, and Storm looked down again. "We're a family here, and we lean on each other during hard times. You don't have to hold us all up by yourself. You've been strong for Scott, Logan, the Professor, and all of us students, and we all appreciate it, but you've got to let us be there for you, too. You need someone to lean on as much as the rest of us do."
Jordan paused before continuing. "Sometimes it helps to talk to someone." Looking over at the cup of cold hot chocolate sitting on the table, the girl took it in her hands and, using her powers, warmed the drink until it steamed. Handing it to Storm, she leaned back against the couch.
Storm was quiet for a minute, but she finally said, "Jean and I were always very close. From the day we met, we stood behind each other, especially when it came to Scott and the other boys. They were constantly playing tricks on us back then." She smiled at some memory from long ago. "Since that first day..." As Storm began to relate the story of the day she and Jean met, Jordan notice the moon peaking out from behind the clouds. She knew then that everything would be alright.
