The Grinch Goes to Bethlehem

Disclaimer: The Grinch belongs to Dr. Seuss.

Author's Note: Hey reader/readers! In school, we're having this contest for a story with the title, "The Grinch Goes to Bethlehem". It's a Catholic school, you see. Anyway, I thought I'd put my poem on the website (since I can't submit it to the contest. It's supposed to have 6-10 couplets, but as you can see, it has more than that). Hope you enjoy, and please review!!!!

This is a tale of the Grinch, as famous is he,

Though how he stole Christmas is not this story.

The Grinch, now merry, heard from where Christmas came,

And he tried to find Bethlehem, as sort of a game.

He searched far and wide, over deserts and trees,

Down hills and up mountains, and swimming through seas.

At last he found the village of what he was searching for,

Oh, how excited he was, he could not be more.

Though as he looked around at this old, stone-made place,

A look of great shock spread over his face.

There were no trees, no decor, no goober-who fluff,

No dinkle-toe, who-loosh and things of such stuff.

He asked a man passing by wearing robes, and sandals too,

And the very-lost Grinch asked him a question so blue:

"Sir, where are the Christmas trees, decor and delicious feasts,

And the dinkle-toe, who-loosh and tasty roast beast?"

The man, quite confused, chuckled with a gleeful sigh,

And the man with robes and sandals gave him a reply:

"Why, there are no trees, decor or delicious feasts,

Dinkle-toe, who-loosh, and what is roast beast?

There is no such 'Christmas', I am sorry to say,

I do wish you well, and have a good day."

The man walked away and the Grinch gave a frown,

Was it that maybe he was in the wrong town?

Maybe it was Bethlahi, Bethalaho, Bethalaha, Bethlahu,

or was it Ethlehem, Ethlehin, or even Ethli-thinlu?

Trouble, he looked up, and watched a bright star in a stare,

And in his head he got the notion, "Maybe this star will lead somewhere!"

So he followed this start all the way to a stable of hay,

And saw a crowd gathered around a newborn where it lay.

The Grinch asked a shepherd there, "What's all this stir?"

And the shepherd said back, "It is our Savoir, sir.

That babe over there, is the Son of God, you see,

And he will bring salvation and peace to you and me."

As the baby whimpered in a babyish cry,

The Grinch smiled softly with a tear in his eye.

There stood before him, Jesus, so new and small,

Who would grow up as God's son, and teach God's love to all.

It's at that scene, the Grinch just suddenly found out,

What the foundation of Christmas was all about.

It was of course about giving, about sharing and love,

But it was also about the birth of the Son from above,

Who taught us to give, to love and to share,

It was from him that we even learnt how to care.

So on that night, the Grinch could understand,

Why we have Christmas each year and gather hand-in-hand.
