Joy
Daphne didn't bother knocking, Su Li wouldn't hear it. The house was in a typical state of disarray, so she busied herself with cleaning spells, put the kettle on and threw out half of the food which had gone off in the fridge, including a jar which seemed to be growing.
To the rest of the wizarding world, Su Li was two things. She was an advocate for disabled and marginalised magical folk, and she was a bestselling author that had sold millions of novels. To Daphne, she was an obsessive writer who forgot to clean, sleep or eat whenever a deadline was looming.
After satisfying herself that she had tidied all she could, Daphne left some fresh soup on the hob and headed outside, towards the shed at the bottom of the garden. It was painted a bright sunshine yellow. Daphne knew that people didn't exactly understand their relationship. She was a Pureblood due to be betrothed with excessive wealth to her name and Su Li was both deaf and mute, a recluse. Even when they were young however, Daphne had loved to sit next to Su Li whenever their houses shared classes. She was the smartest person Daphne knew, and she had happily taught Daphne how to sign.
'You've got to eat,' Daphne said, her hand movements sharp and face stern to emphasise her seriousness. Su Li merely rolled her eyes.
'I was up before dawn this morning trying to work out people's ages. Don't say anything, it's never too early for maths.'
They bickered for a while, Su Li in a happy mood as she smiled, signing broadly and excitedly, a grin on her face as she described her latest plot twist. Somehow it involved a bicycle, which explained why there was one inside the shed taking up a lot of space - research, apparently.
'You are terrible, if you leave it on a cliffhanger like that!' Daphne admonished with a frown. Su Li just winked.
They had soup out in the garden on a picnic bench, both staring out to sea and Daphne put her arms around Su Li, kissing the top of her head gently.
'You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.'
Su Li looks taken aback and then as Daphne got down on one knee, put her hand to her mouth, eyes filling with tears.
'I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me?'
'What about your family?' Su Li was trembling.
'The only person I care about is you. The only thing I care about is your answer.'
'Yes! Yes, yes!'
They kissed, Daphne lifting Su Li off her feet. If it was one thing she had learnt growing up through the war, it was that happiness was more important than duty. She had never felt more joy than when she slipped a ring onto her fiancee's proffered finger.
