Sirius's Sorting
A/N: I also have a "the first time Sirius and James met" story to post. I have to find it and type it up. Well, this is just a little drabble I thought of to explain Sirius being Sorted.
Disclaimer: Not JKR. Thanks for the compliment though.
Sirius Black was terrified. He had to admit, it was not a very brave thing to be- not like James, his newly minted best friend, who was incredibly confident in himself. Or so he looked. James Potter was an incredibly smooth human being. He wasn't afraid of being Sorted, not like Sirius was, because James was sure he would be in Gryffindor. Sirius wasn't so sure about Gryffindor, actually he was rather sure he would be placed in Slytherin like the rest of his family. James kept assuring Sirius he was equally terrified, though he also assured Sirius that if he got Sorted into Slytherin he would walk out of the school and not come back.
Sirius wished he could say the same, but he wasn't as confident in himself as James. James didn't come from a family that relished in the Dark Arts and Pureblood supremacy bullcrap and their own evil reputation. Sirius did, and he really wanted to go to school to change that, so if he got Sorted into Slytherin he would just have to stay there so he could get educated and prove his family wrong about him.
The tall, stern-looking middle-aged Deputy Headmistress McGonagall came and told them about the school and that she was Head of Gryffindor House, and James looked slightly downtrodden at that, because she was a scary woman. But he was a chipper eleven year old, and James Potter clapped Sirius confidently on the back when he was called up. Sirius winced at the whispers and jeers that shot through the Great Hall when his surname "Black" was called.
Then he walked up onto the stage with the entire hall staring unhappily at him, even the cluster of Slytherins with Black family good looks, because he had not been a pleasant child. Sirius glared back at them as he sat on the stool, feeling dwarfed by the world, especially once the Sorting Hat was set on his head and it fell over his ears. Sirius gulped when the Hat started speaking to him. His cousin Andromeda had told him about this, the Hat spoke to you and read your mind and decided where you were to be Sorted. You are a Black. It's Slytherin you'll be wanting then, I suppose, correct?
No, not there. I hate them and everything to do with them. But if I have to be in Slytherin put me there, Hat, because I want to go to school really bad.
Brave to accept going where you don't want to go. And I see a trace of foolhardiness in you- and already friends with a Potter? I think there's only one place for you, Mr. Black. "GRYFFINDOR!" boomed the Hat, making Sirius jump in surprise at the noise right over his head, and everybody else in the Hall jump with shock- except for James, who clapped loudly and screamed, "I knew it!"
Sirius looked around, eyes wide, still very surprised. Really? he thought. This is amazing! He laughed, flipping off his family at the Slytherin table, and ripped the Hat off his head. "Take that, mother!" he crowed jubilantly and ran to the Gryffindor table.
And thus did Sirius Black earn his first detention.
